Overview
Seeking an upbeat, social, energetic person to be a personal attendant for a 37-year-old upbeat, social, and energetic male. He is an adult with intellectual, communication & physical disabilities. In need of a person who can provide essential support to enhance quality of life, taking into consideration varying needs & abilities. This role involves assisting the client with activities of daily living (ADLs), ensuring his safety, dignity, respect & promoting greater independence.
Responsibilities
- Assist with ADLs, including bathing, grooming, and dressing.
- Assist with issues of incontinence and/or habit training for toilet use.
- Help with meal planning and preparation, ensuring nutritional needs are met & his multiple food allergies are taken into consideration for each meal and/or snack.
- Provide companionship and assist client in choosing and participating in social activities to enhance independence, dignity & respect for self as an adult and respect by others.
- Assist with mobility issues in home, including transferring in and out of chairs and bed.
- Provide transportation in client’s wheelchair accessible van to and from his day program, appointments, and/or social events.
- Complete chores which would be completed by client – if he were able; including but not limited to keeping his bedroom and personal space neat and tidy, regularly vacuum his room/living room rug, dust in his bedroom, clean bedroom microwave, wash, dry, fold & put away client’s laundry, strip and make bed, all chores as necessary by shift, etc.
- Monitor and report ADL issues, changes in physical and/or emotional state to family members and/or healthcare providers, verbally and/or in communication notebook.
Qualifications
- Ability to pass a federal background investigation
- Clean CA driving record
- Current CA Real ID driver license – or to be obtained within 6-months of employment
- With our assistance, obtain a one-year pass for access to military installations for medical appointments, social outings or shopping excursions on our local and/or other military bases as necessary.
- Current first aid and CPR certification; or higher certification or education.
- Experience in caregiving for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
- Understanding of disabilities and the challenges faced by adults with intellectuals and physical disabilities, in general; and within 6-mos of employment, client’s specific diagnoses & disabilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, the use of low and hi-tech assistive technology devices for communication.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, the use of Nephi, nasal epinephrin, in the event of an anaphylaxis episode as instructed by 911 operator.
- Ability to work under direct supervision and/or independently.
- The ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language, including medication instructions and medical terminology.

Attendant’s Work Environment
- Typically, works part-time in the client’s home & community
- Possibility of set shifts &/or some flexibility in hours.
- Collaboration with day program staff, healthcare professionals, community acquaintances, friends and family members to create a supportive care plan.
Pay: $30.00 per hour
