Museum Educator at Connecticut’s Old State House

The Connecticut Democracy Center
Hartford, CT Full Time
POSTED ON 4/27/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/23/2026

Full-Time | 40 hrs/week | On-Site | $17 – $20/hr. | Hartford, CT

Position Summary:

The Connecticut Democracy Center is seeking passionate and engaging Museum Educators to help bring Connecticut’s history and civic life to audiences of all ages at Connecticut’s Old State House.

In this role, you won’t just share information—you’ll spark curiosity, facilitate dialogue, and help visitors make meaningful connections between the past and the present. Whether working with a classroom of students, a group of educators, or members of the public exploring on their own, you will create experiences that are interactive, inclusive, and grounded in the belief that civic learning matters.

Museum Educators are central to how we deliver on our mission. They serve as facilitators, storytellers, and ambassadors—helping every visitor feel welcome while encouraging deeper understanding of Connecticut’s history, government, and the role each of us plays in a democracy.

What You’ll Do:

A typical day might include leading a lively school program in the historic chambers of the Old State House, guiding a tour that connects 18th-century debates to today’s civic challenges, or helping a family navigate the museum in a way that feels approachable and engaging. You’ll adapt your approach depending on your audience—shifting seamlessly between working with young students, educators, and adult visitors—while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and inclusivity.

Beyond program delivery, you’ll contribute to the broader visitor experience. You may greet guests as they arrive, answer questions, assist with admissions or museum shop purchases, and help ensure that every person who walks through the doors feels welcomed and supported. You’ll also collaborate with colleagues across education, visitor services, and public programs to coordinate group visits, support events, and continuously improve our initiatives.

This role also invites curiosity and creativity. You’ll help refine educational materials, contribute ideas for new programs, and stay informed about best practices in museum education, civic learning, and visitor engagement. Your observations—what resonates with audiences, where there are gaps, and how experiences can improve—will directly shape our work.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with people and ideas—someone who can communicate clearly, think on their feet, and create an environment where others feel comfortable asking questions and participating. Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills are essential, as is a genuine interest in history, civics, and public engagement.

You should be comfortable speaking with groups, adaptable in your approach, and attentive to detail and accuracy. Just as important is a commitment to inclusion—ensuring that people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences feel respected and able to engage meaningfully.

Experience in education, museums, youth programming, or public-facing roles is helpful, as is a background in fields like history, political science, or education, but we value relevant experience and enthusiasm just as highly as formal credentials.

Work Environment & Schedule:

This is a full-time, hourly position based on-site in Hartford. This in-person role requires a flexible schedule including expected and unexpected overtime, both on- and off-site. Schedules vary depending on program and visitor needs and may include weekdays, weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays. The role involves standing, walking, and leading tours throughout a historic building, including navigating stairs and facilitating outdoor experiences when needed. Candidates must have a driver’s license and reliable transportation and be willing to travel to in-state locations as needed.
