The Community Youth Program at St. John’s, Inc. (CYP) is a nonprofit organization providing year-round academic support and enrichment programming for Roanoke City Public School students in grades 3–12. Our mission is to support student learning, promote healthy development, and provide a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for youth and their families.
We are seeking a Youth Program Assistant (Part-Time) to support daily program operations, student engagement, and transportation services. This role is essential in ensuring students are safely transported to and from programming and supported throughout their time at CYP.
Hours
- Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM (school year)
- Additional summer programming: 6-week session, Monday–Thursday, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Hours follow the Roanoke City Public Schools calendar
- CYP is closed on school holidays, planned closures, early dismissals, and inclement weather (unpaid)
Responsibilities
- Safely transport students via CYP van to CYP from school and ensure safe drop-off to approved home locations at the end of programming
- Support daily pickup and drop-off logistics in coordination with CYP staff
- Assist with supervision and engagement of youth ages 8–13 during programming
- Help maintain a safe, positive, and structured environment for students
- Support recreation, enrichment, and academic activities as needed
- Assist with maintaining program spaces, materials, and supplies
- Communicate effectively with staff regarding student attendance, behavior, and transportation needs
- Serve as a positive role model for youth and support CYP’s mission
Qualifications
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working with school-age children preferred
- Experience in youth development, education, recreation, or childcare strongly preferred
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required
- Ability to safely transport children and follow all organizational safety procedures
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work with diverse youth and families
- Spanish language skills (spoken and/or written) are a plus
- Must pass a background and DMV check
