About TCNJ

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that is consistently recognized as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ maintains the eighth-highest four-year graduation rate among all public colleges and universities. It is ranked by Money as one of the top 15 public colleges “most likely to pay off financially,” and U.S. News & World Report rates it the No. 1 public institution among regional universities in the northeast.

Position Overview:

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a two-year Global Art History Teaching Postdoc in the Department of Art and Art Education with a joint appointment in the International Studies Program. We seek a candidate with outstanding potential to become an innovative teacher-scholar, whose research and educational experiences have prepared them to contribute to an interdisciplinary and inclusive global art history curriculum. The candidate’s area of research specialization is open; however, the candidate should be prepared to teach a global art history survey course covering 1400-present as well as an upper-level course on Global Modernisms. This position offers an exciting opportunity to build pedagogical skills while serving undergraduate students across multiple academic programs.

The successful candidate will teach four courses each semester. In Fall 2026, for example, they will teach two sections of AAH 102: The World’s Art, 1400-present and two sections of a seminar, Global Modernisms, cross-listed between Art History and International Studies. In subsequent semesters, these core courses will be supplemented with courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. Lower-level courses are capped at 32 students, and seminars are capped at 18 students. The position carries no expectations of service or advising so that the candidate may focus on teaching and on developing effective and engaging pedagogical strategies. In that regard, the candidate will be mentored by the Department chair and further supported by TCNJ’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Required:

  • Be an advanced ABD candidate or have obtained a Ph.D. in Art History or a closely related field within the last five years .
  • Demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Show evidence of ability to teach within a global art history curriculum through publications, conference presentations, dissertation research, teaching, or other educational experiences.
  • Demonstrate cultural competency and ability to foster inclusive learning environments and mutual respect for students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the position. If the requested accommodation(s) cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, the applicant may not be eligible for the position.

Employment at TCNJ is contingent upon the successful completion of an applicable background check, reference checks, and verification of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9).
