POSITION DETAILS

Duties

The Athletics Director will report to the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Athletics Director’s duties will include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Lead the athletics, fitness, and recreational sports programs that report to the Student Athletics Director and provide a vision and strategy by setting goals, stimulating program development, allocating resources, assessing student and other institutional needs, developing appropriate policies, fostering open communication with and among campus constituencies, promoting relevant evaluation methodologies, and participating in decision-making processes.
  • In partnership with Enrollment Management & Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, develop community-centered and advocacy-based programming that integrates student-athletes deeply into the college’s mission of educating for justice.
  • Working closely with the Division of Finance and Administration, the Director develops and administers the yearly Athletics budget. This includes managing revenue from rentals, recreation membership, and donations. Ensures that allocations reflect department philosophy and priorities and that expenditures follow New York State, New York City and CUNY procurement policies and procedures.
  • Directly recruit, mentor, and supervise full-time administrative staff, head coaches, sports information personnel, athletic trainers, and other staff members who are committed to excellence in student-athlete welfare, educating for justice, academics, professionalism, and the success of the athletics programs.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA Division III and conference regulations, maintain a strong working knowledge of evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL standards, and advise senior leadership on regional and national governance matters.
  • Provides development, strategy, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of ongoing and new athletic programs designed to maintain, encourage, and increase participation. Maintains curiosity, involvement, and research to recognize and stay abreast of new and emerging trends in athletic programs, individual sports, and intramural/recreation programs.
  • Design and implement an intramural sports program that fosters active student participation and internal competition. Responsibilities include recruiting participants, organizing and training for game days, and promoting the program throughout the college community.
  • Align departmental student recruitment philosophy, strategies, and commitment to the values of academic excellence and student belonging with Academic Affairs, and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
  • In coordination with Enrollment Management & Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, establish student success, holistic mental health support structures, and student career development initiatives for student-athletes.
  • Collaborate with College and departmental professionals on promoting athletic communications through social/digital channels, storytelling, and brand strategy.
  • In partnership with College Alumni Affairs, direct alumni athletic events, cultivate community partnerships, expand corporate sponsorships, and identify opportunities to enhance fundraising efforts to support the department’s initiatives and goals.
  • Establish and maintain scheduling and facilities usage for athletic competitions, practices, rentals, and events in collaboration with campus facilities management.
  • Establish and maintain standards of dress, scholarship and conduct for team travel and training, and practice rules for all athletes.
  • Requires consistent evening, weekend, and holiday availability for game-day management, as well as institutional travel for conference and NCAA tournament events.
  • Represent the College at professional meetings and other special or public events.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the department through recruiting, training, and mentoring efforts.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

Other Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of athletic administration at the collegiate level and commitment to excellence in academics and athletics.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in collegiate athletic administration, including experience in:
  • NCAA DIII, Title IX compliance.
  • Departmental budgeting and strategic fiscal allocation.
  • Facility scheduling and multi use event coordination.
  • Personnel supervision, staff development, and coach mentorship.
  • Facility management and capital improvement collaboration
  • Experience with budgets that include multiple revenue and budget streams preferred
  • Excellent written, public speaking and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Prior experience as an Athletic Director, Interim or Senior Associate Athletic Director highly desired or preferred.
  • Background in establishing modern student-athlete wellness programs, mental health support frameworks, and community engagement models
  • Collegiate coaching and/or playing experience a plus.

Cuny Title Overview

Provides administrative direction and oversight for intercollegiate, intramural and recreational athletics staff, programs, facilities and activities.

  • Provides oversight for all athletics programs, facilities, and equipment
  • Ensures compliance with federal, divisional and university athletics regulations
  • Administers departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Collaborates with other College departments on recruiting and retaining student athletes
  • Collaborates with College communications professionals and the media on publicity and reporting of athletic events and results
  • Manages full- and part-time athletics staff
  • Plans, implements, and promotes intercollegiate, intramural, and recreational athletic programs including varsity sports, intramural program, a range of credit and non-credit recreational programs
  • Establish and maintain appropriate policies and standards for teams and recreational groups
  • Collect and analyze departmental statistics and data and prepare and distribute reports as appropriate
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Compensation And Benefits

Salary commensurate with education and experience.

Salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
