The City College of New York (CCNY) is seeking a dedicated and reliable Steamfitter’s Helper to join our Facilities Department. In this role, you will contribute to the safe, efficient, and uninterrupted operation of heating, cooling, and mechanical systems across campus.
Under direct supervision, the Steamfitter’s Helper supports journeyman Steamfitters with the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping, equipment, and mechanical systems. This position is ideal for someone who is dependable, mechanically inclined, and eager to work in a dynamic and collaborative campus environment.

CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.

Under direct supervision, the Steamfitter’s Helper supports journeyman Steamfitters with the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping, equipment, and mechanical systems. This position is ideal for someone who is dependable, mechanically inclined, and eager to work in a dynamic and collaborative campus environment.
Duties Include
- Ensure Steamfitter shop is kept clean and in good order.
- Receive newly purchased material and maintain parts inventory.
- Assist with the replacement of space fan coil units.
- Make inspection rounds of campus buildings as directed by Steamfitters.
- May be called upon to guide contractors involved with Capital Projects.
- Perform relate tasks to support Steamfitters and mechanical operations.
- Three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter's Helper acquired within the last ten years; OR
- At least one and one-half years of such experience as described in 1 above plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, vocational or technical high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade, vocational or technical high school.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow instructions, read basic plans/sketches, and work safely.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Comfortable working in a campus setting with multiple buildings and mechanical systems.
