Hunter College of The City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences. Located in the heart of Manhattan, Hunter College is the largest college in CUNY and one of the oldest public colleges in the country.

The School of Arts & Sciences at Hunter College is home to over 460 full-time faculty across 30 departments and interdisciplinary programs. Serving more than 15,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students, the School of Arts & Sciences delivers the majority of Hunter’s general education curriculum and a wide array of disciplinary and pre-professional degree pathways. Hunter’s student body is as diverse as New York City itself.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Provost and President of the College, the Dean will have the vision and experience to advance the goals of the Hunter College Strategic Plan, uphold our high standards for faculty research, teaching, and service, and implement policies and practices that promote student success. The Dean will be expected to enhance the school's profile, visibility, and effectiveness by providing intellectual leadership, facilitating a culture of innovation and collaboration, and serving as a strong advocate for faculty work. The Dean has the following specific responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the provost allocate fulltime faculty lines.
  • Oversee all fulltime faculty recruitment.
  • Reflecting College strategic priorities, establish school-level annual priorities and regularly review progress toward achieving these objectives.
  • Chair all divisional level personnel meetings for reappointment, tenure, and promotion.
  • Chair the School’s Executive Committee Meetings and the School Annual Meeting.
  • Review annually the progress of all faculty below the level of full professor.
  • Encourage faculty grantsmanship, scholarship, and creative activity.
  • Oversee course scheduling to assure that sufficient capacity is available to allow students to make timely progress toward their degree.
  • Establish, review, and revise per School governance all School-level policies on faculty workload, class size, adjunct compensation for non-teaching duties, administrative reassigned time, etc.
  • Review annual reports submitted by the academic departments and promote the integration of data-informed decisions.
  • Oversee academic program reviews as needed.
  • Systematically examine obstacles to student success and work with academic departments, student affairs and the office of the provost to reduce or remove these obstacles.
  • Serve as a voting member of the Hunter College Senate.
  • Initiate curricular changes and innovations to assure that the curriculum reflects best current practices and ideas across academia.
  • Integrate career preparation initiatives and curricula within academic departments.
  • In cooperation with the president and institutional advancement, engage actively in fund-raising for the school.
  • Collaborate with senior administration on initiatives related to establishing the college as an anchor institution while enhancing publicly-engaged scholarship and community engagement.

Qualifications

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Compensation And Benefits

Salary range $200,000 to $225,000 with the potential for supplemental salary, research, and/or professional funds commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
