Role Description The Associate Fire Protection Engineer is a full-time role responsible for supporting the planning, design, review, and implementation of fire protection and life safety systems for City facilities, infrastructure, and development projects. This hybrid role is based in San Diego, CA, with a mix of on-site work and approved work-from-home activities. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing building and fire protection plans for code compliance, conducting technical analyses of fire suppression and life safety systems, and preparing reports and recommendations to enhance safety in new and existing structures. The role collaborates with other City departments, external design teams, and code enforcement personnel, providing technical guidance on fire safety standards, ordinances, and best practices. The Associate Fire Protection Engineer also assists in inspections, supports the development of policies and procedures, and participates in public outreach or stakeholder meetings related to fire and life safety.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in Fire Protection Engineering, including the ability to analyze, design, and review fire protection systems for a variety of occupancies.
- Knowledge of Fire Safety and Life Safety principles, including building and fire codes, evacuation requirements, and occupant protection strategies.
- Experience in Safety Engineering, focusing on risk assessment, hazard mitigation, and safety program implementation within the built environment.
- Practical understanding of Fire Suppression Systems, such as sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire alarms, and special hazard suppression systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field; an advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., PE in Fire Protection) is a plus.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., California Fire Code, NFPA standards, building codes) and the ability to interpret and apply them to real-world projects.
