Animal Control Officer
The City of Luling is accepting applications for a full-time Animal Control Officer. The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcing municipal and state animal control laws, protecting public safety, and promoting the humane treatment of animals within the community. This position responds to calls for service, investigates complaints, captures and impounds stray or dangerous animals, and educates the public on responsible pet ownership and applicable regulations. Starting pay is $17 per hour, depending on qualifications.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of local and state animal control laws and regulations.
- Understanding of animal behavior, handling techniques, and humane capture methods.
- Ability to safely operate animal control equipment such as catch poles, traps, nets, and protective gear.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in stressful or unpredictable situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with the public, sometimes in confrontational situations.
- Ability to handle animals safely and humanely, including aggressive or frightened animals.
- Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and report entry.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain required certifications (e.g., Animal Control Officer Certification, Euthanasia Certification) within the first six (6) months of employment.
- Experience working with animals, enforcement, public safety, or related fields preferred.
- Ability to pass background check, drug screening, and any required physical exams.
