SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Public Works Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including water and sewer utilities, wastewater systems, streets, solid waste operations, grounds and facility maintenance, and general public works services.
This position is a multi-discipline generalist role and employees are expected to assist in any and all functions of the Public Works Department as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Utility (Water & Sewer) Maintenance

  • Assists with installation, repair, and replacement of water services, water mains, sewer services, and sewer mains.
  • Performs routine and emergency repairs on water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on sewer pump stations and related equipment.
  • Assists with inflow and infiltration identification and reduction efforts.

Operations & Equipment

  • Operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment, including:

Backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, jackhammers, compact loaders, utility trucks, lawn mowers, pressure washers, and other equipment as assigned.

  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles; reports issues promptly.

Solid Waste & Streets

  • Assists with solid waste collection, debris removal, recycling, and landfill/transfer station tasks as assigned.
  • Performs basic street and right-of-way repairs, patching, and maintenance.

Grounds, Facilities & General Public Works

  • Performs grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, litter removal, and landscaping.
  • Provides basic facility upkeep including painting, small carpentry tasks, minor repairs, and general cleaning.
  • Supports downtown beautification, special events, and seasonal projects.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Responds to after-hours emergencies, on-call duties, weather events, and service interruptions.
  • Follows all safety policies, procedures, and training requirements.
  • Maintains good public relations and interacts professionally with residents and staff.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, within the scope of training and operational need.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair practices for public works and utility systems.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment and tools safely and effectively.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn new skills across multiple work disciplines.
  • Ability to perform physical labor in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid State driver’s license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within 6-12 months.
  • Experience in public works, utilities, construction, or related fields preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces.
  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, chemicals, wastewater, traffic, and outdoor elements.
  • Use of safety equipment is required.

Pay: $30,000.00 - $39,000.00 per year

Work Location: In person
