What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Lifeguard position at The City of Galesburg?
The City of Galesburg seeks qualified applicants to fill part-time Lifeguard positions in the Department of Parks and Recreation. Lifeguards work a varied schedule during the week and are paid $16.00 per hour.
There are no benefits associated with this position.
Lifeguarding with our department is focused on safety, customer service & fun! Ongoing in-service training along with professional auditing help keep our skills sharp & everyone safe. Our paid in-services often include both serious drills and fun games/activities. Our fan favorites are sharks & minnows/water polo for fitness training, first aid with fake blood & makeup, and all staff full EAP drills.
Can't work the full summer? Our seasonal commitments are flexible if you communicate your needs ahead of time. We hope to have you for 20-40 hours a week from Memorial Day weekend through 8/31/2025, with 2-3 weeks of time off for your social commitments. If you need more time off, have sports schedules to work around, or need to start/end at a different time that may be possible.
Essential Duties of the Position
- Responsible for the overall safety of patrons using City Facilities
- Enforces rules and regulations, prevents accidents and responds to emergencies as they arise
- Performs lifeguard surveillance, assists, rescues, and has decision-making authority
- Must possess or acquire American Red Cross Lifeguard certifications
- Assists with water safety education, swim lessons and special events as assigned
- Performs daily duties to include: completing necessary reports, recordkeeping, cleaning and other duties as may be assigned
- Completes 4 hours of paid inservice training each month.
Minimum Requirements
- Applicants must be currently certified or enrolled in a class for:
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
- Applicants must be 15 years of age or older
- 15 year old applicants must have a workers permit prior to beginning work
- Must pass a pre-employment background check
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
Required Skill and Ability
The successful applicant must possess the ability to:
- Read, write and understand the English language
- Read, interpret and apply policies and procedures
- Comply with all City and Departmental safety rules and policies
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with the public and co-workers
- Perform moderate recreational activity in an outdoor environment
- Maintain physical, mental, and emotional fitness to perform rescues in emergency situations.
- Maintain knowledge of lifeguarding skills
Ideal Requirements
Any candidates with the following qualifications will be considered for additional job duties such as swim lesson instructor, fitness instructor, lifeguard instructor, games leaders, swim team coach, and leadership positions.
- Water Safety Instructor certification
- Lifeguard Instructor certification
- Lifeguard Management Certification
- Experience as a competitive swimmer
- Experience or training as a teacher
- Experience or training as a swim coach
- Experience or training as a lifeguard supervisor
- Experience or training as a fitness instructor
