The Department of Public Works seeks qualified candidates for the Maintenance Worker position in the Streets Division. This permanent, overtime-eligible, AFSCME bargaining unit position is compensated at a starting rate of $24.84 per hour (Pay Range 16, Step A).
The pay range for this position is $24.84 - $31.79.
Essential Duties of the Position
Incumbents in this classification provide semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance of city streets, bridges, sidewalks, and other public areas. The Maintenance Worker works under direct supervision to repair, replace, and patch concrete, asphalt, and brick street surfaces; repair sidewalks and driveways; construct and repair curb and gutter and storm sewer inlets; replace culverts, storm sewers, gutters, and other drainage facilities; and fill shoulder ruts with dirt or gravel. Incumbents typically operate a variety of automotive and heavy equipment in conjunction with job assignments, such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, and end loaders, as well as performing snow removal operations during the winter months as needed.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
A valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement at the time of hire, or must obtain one within six months from the date of hire.
At least one year of experience in construction; additional experience and training are desirable.
A thorough knowledge of basic construction principles, methods, techniques, and procedures.
Knowledge, understanding, and compliance with all city, state, and federal safety rules and regulations that are applicable to the construction industry.
The ability to regularly work 24 hours on-call to respond to emergency work requests.
Previous experience with plowing snow preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis and be able to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. Must be able to climb a ladder, lift, walk, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, reach, and sit. As many of the job duties are outside, the applicant must be able to tolerate manual labor performed in varied and extreme weather conditions.
