GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, incumbents in this position receive and refer requests for public safety services, including but not limited to, Police, Fire, Paramedics, Sheriff’s Department, Town Marshall, Animal Control, Public Works, and various other City and/or County services. This is an AFSCME bargaining unit position with a current starting wage of $22.73 per hour plus the full range of municipal benefits.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Incumbents perform the full range of dispatch duties with a high degree of independence, including receiving requests for assistance; evaluating criticality and type of response needed; dispatching personnel to assist with the reported situation; monitoring the ongoing situation; and ensuring the safety of assigned personnel for the duration of the response. Work is often performed under pressure and may involve the simultaneous monitoring of several locations and multiple units. Dispatchers access, utilize and relay pertinent information from federal, state, and local law enforcement computer systems (i.e., the Law Enforcement Agency Data System (L.E.A.D.S.), National Crime Information Center (N.C.I.C.), and Secretary of State (SOS) data systems. Contributes to building security; monitors internal/external Public Safety Building video security systems; controls overhead garage doors, walk-in doors, and the alert/assist notification system. Conducts record checks, maintains records of warrants, wanted/missing persons, stolen items, orders of protection, and performs other related clerical administrative support duties as may be assigned. Additionally, incumbents operate various multi-agency electronic telecommunications and data communications equipment, the 911 telephone system, TDD device for the deaf, pager system, the 24-hour recording system, and the Local Area Network (L.A.N.).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF THE POSITION
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) certification must be obtained within one year of hire and periodically updated.
- Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification must be obtained within one year of hire and periodically updated.
- Requires the ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
- Requires the willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Requires the ability to develop skill and speed in the operation of radio-telephone equipment.
- Must be able to communicate with the public in a courteous, concise manner in stressful circumstances.
- Requires the ability to obtain and provide basic information relating to the activities and requirements of the assigned units.
- Requires the ability to type accurately at a working rate of speed and to maintain clerical records and reports.
- Requires the ability to understand and follow varied instructions.
- Requires skill in typing, data entry, personal computing and operation of other standard office equipment.
