POSITION: Part-Time Custodian
DIVISION: Municipal Building Maintenance
STATUS : Part-time, Up to 28 hours per week.
CATEGORY : Hourly, up to $22

REPORTS TO: Mayor’s Office/Buildings and Grounds
Monday to Thursday 2:30 PM – 8:00 PM; Friday hours to be determined

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

JOB SUMMARY
The Custodian is responsible for a broad range of general cleaning and maintenance duties throughout the Municipal Building. This position supports a clean, safe, and functional work environment across all floors and common areas.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Daily
- Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables from all three floors, including offices, hallways, restrooms, the Courtroom, and Council Chambers.
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum hallways, restrooms, the front lobby, building entrances, the elevator, and stairwells.
- Conduct spot-cleaning checks of the City Clerk’s Office, Judge’s Office, and Second Floor Break Room each shift.
- Secure the building at the end of each shift (lights off, all doors locked).
Fridays
Perform a thorough cleaning of the City Clerk’s Office, Judge’s Office, and Second Floor Break Room.
As Needed
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs and log the date of replacement.
- Check and replace air fresheners; maintain a log of installation and replacement dates.
- Polish all brass railings and remove black marks from tile floors.
- Clear and salt all building entrances during snow and ice events.
- Post “Caution: Wet Floor” signage as appropriate.
- Monitor and restock custodial supplies; initiate procurement to maintain adequate stock levels.
- Clean up following special events.
- Deliver paper supplies to the Human Resources department.
- Monitor outdoor trash containers and ashtrays.
- Report any building damage, equipment failures, or maintenance needs to the Executive Custodian promptly.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monthly
- Inspect all emergency and exit lights and document the date of inspection.
- Sweep and mop the elevator control room.
- Dust all fixtures, cabinets, and concession machines.
- Perform other related duties as directed by a supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Drivers License
- Previous custodial work preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Self-motivated with the ability to perform job responsibilities without constant supervision.
- Capable of learning new maintenance techniques through on-the-job instruction.
- Ability to perform minor plumbing and equipment repairs; able to accurately assess when escalation to a licensed trades professional is warranted.
- Ability to read and apply information from general maintenance manuals and safety data sheets.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and complete assigned tasks independently.
- Demonstrated reliability, including availability for after-hours emergency response, including building alarm situations.
- Ability to direct the work of others in a professional and cooperative manner.
- Familiarity with basic procurement practices and the ability to make authorized purchases on behalf of the department.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
- This position requires physical agility and strength sufficient to perform the following on a regular basis: shoveling, lifting, pushing, and pulling materials or objects weighing up to 100 pounds. The position also requires working at heights in connection with rooftop flag maintenance. Employees must be able to perform all physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.

POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED
- The City of Elkhart is a Drug-Free Workplace. A post-offer drug screen is required prior to employment. Random drug testing may be conducted after hire.
- Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports are required.
