Role Description

The City of Bristol, VA is seeking a dedicated City Engineer with our Public Works department to join in our efforts in supporting the daily operation of local City government. This position performs complex professional and difficult administrative work overseeing the planning, design and inspection of engineering and construction projects in the City with particular emphasis on transportation and infrastructure.
Responsible for engineering, storm water, MS-4 program, site plans, bridges, transportation, and traffic services. Oversees and manages major capital improvement projects, particularly those involving transportation systems and infrastructure. Plans, organizes and directs the design and construction of capital improvements ensuring compliance with City development, construction and maintenance policies, rules and regulations. Coordinates work with other agencies and departments and supervises within the engineering department.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Civil Engineering principles, including project planning, design, and construction oversight
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure systems, such as transportation networks, water, and wastewater systems
- Strong technical skills in drafting, modeling, or using engineering software
- Project management abilities, including coordinating with contractors and managing timelines
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Minimum 5 years experience in professional civil engineering including some supervisory experience
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or ability to secure one within six months required
- Understanding of local government operations and experience in municipal engineering is highly beneficial
