GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision is responsible for assisting all areas of the Public Works Division. Including but not limited to sanitation, street, grounds, and maintenance services. This flexible position will be cross-trained to perform multiple functions and expected to participate in professional and trade employee training. Reports to the Public Works Director

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operating a variety of trucks and specialized equipment, such as knuckle boom loaders, backhoes, and mini excavators.

Inspects machinery and equipment daily to ensure proper condition for the completion of daily responsibilities; performs necessary repair and maintenance; services vehicle as needed including washing, greasing, fueling, etc.; ensures bolts, hoses, and pins are properly secured for safe operation. Reports all equipment malfunctions.

Picks up curb-side garbage or recycling ensuring collection and disposal at landfills. Receive and turn in landfill tickets.

Remains abreast of street locations and current traffic laws.

Ensures the proper loading of debris onto trailer; removes debris as safely and expeditiously as possible. Exercises care in performing duties ensuring no damage made to telephone lines, power lines, and private property.

Interacts with various individuals and groups such as co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

Assists the City with necessary duties during City Events, which will sometimes be outside of the normal working schedule.

May be required to work overtime as needed.

Performs other Public Works duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent. Must possess a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the organization as they pertain to the specific duties of the job. Knowledge of the practices, methods, machinery, equipment, and tools used within street maintenance activities. Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of the proper and safe use of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for assignment completion. Knowledge of the records that must be prepared in order to meet the requirements of the department.

Skills/Effort:

Ability to read and write, and to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility. Ability to perform work required on work orders. Ability to work from the direction of immediate supervisor. Ability to work well with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public. Ability to perform routine servicing and repair operations of equipment and machinery. Skill in operating machinery necessary for the performance of duties.

Working Conditions:

Work is conducted outdoors with exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, electrical danger, vibrations, dusts, wetness, and heights. Moderately heavy to very heavy physical exertion is frequently required to lift and move objects weighing twenty-five to one hundred pounds using proper personal protective equipment.
