Job Description

The Advising Coach is responsible for helping the College meet its Student Success goals by supporting students’ persistence and program completion. This is achieved by way of coaching, advising as needed, connecting students with on-campus and external resources, and facilitating student orientation and other initiatives and activities aimed at increasing retention and persistence. Advising Coaches serve as the students’ go-to resource for personalized and empowering support as they navigate the ins-and-outs of life at TCC and prepare for a career in healthcare.

Responsibilities

Help students navigate their academic program with success:

  • Coach students to support their success by asking intentional and strategic questions that empower the student to build on his/her strengths, establish goals, explore, and identify the most impactful and relevant solutions, and pave a clear path to success.
  • Guides matriculated students in multiple areas, as needed, including utilizing resources to navigate curricular plans, course options and schedules, use of electronic and other resources pertaining to registration and college success.
  • Keeps apprised of best practices and innovations in best practices and evidence-based approaches to supporting student success.
  • Creates and maintains meaningful coaching relationships with students to aid in their development and success along the student life cycle, with a focus on at-risk populations and student persistence and retention.
  • Collaborates with other departments or staff to develop and maintain resources and services that bolster student success.
  • Provides resources and guidance for matriculated students during enrollment events.
  • Communicates clearly, promptly, and accurately with students via multiple forums including, but not limited to, in-person, Teams, phone, text, and email.

Coordinate support and retention efforts on behalf of the Department of Student Success, including:

  • Communicates with, provides interventions for, and monitors responses of students who have received early alerts and other early indicators of at-risk behavior that could threaten their ability to persist.
  • Actively works with students, faculty, and staff to develop and implement strategies to increase retention and completion rates.
  • Assists with proctoring services and accommodations, as needed.
  • Provides and supports student-centered activities/events that may include open houses, tours, orientation activities, graduation, and other celebration ceremonies.
  • Works variable schedule if needed, including evenings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Coordinate student engagement activities, including matriculated student events and orientation:

  • Assist in crafting and implementing a plan for ongoing, regularly scheduled First Year Experience events and programs designed to bolster connectedness and engagement, tracking participation, and assessing effectiveness to optimize funding and resources
  • Assist in developing, planning, and implementing orientation, including oversight of enrollment steps tracking and any relevant online orientation content
  • Provide general oversight for student organizations, including budgets, and serve as a point person for faculty advisors.
  • Coordinate student life opportunities. This includes creating a programming calendar, management of student activity fees budget, and implementing at least two programming or student life opportunities per month (discretion can be used when it doesn’t make sense to have two separate opportunities) during the academic year.
  • Collaborate with other student services staff to ensure students transition smoothly and remain engaged from matriculation to enrollment

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in related field.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-3 years of progressive experience creating and delivering student educational activities, preferably in academic advising, coaching, and/or career development preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of successful collaboration among academic and non-academic partners desirable.
  • Community engagement and service activities, a plus.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders including students, staff, alumni, faculty, and employers to effect innovation and meet departmental goals.
  • Familiarity with current best practices in student success and career services, such as academic advising, student retention, etc.
  • Understanding of and commitment to best practices in student retention initiatives.
  • Ability to support strategic initiatives related to the College’s retention activities.
  • Talk to others to convey information effectively and listen to others by giving full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made, ask appropriate questions, and do not interrupt at inappropriate times.
  • Be aware of other’s reactions and understanding why they react as they do through appropriate social perceptiveness.
  • Monitor/assess performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
