What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gas Fireplace Technician / Hearth Appliance Specialist position at The Chimney Scientist?
Job Overview
The Chimney Scientist is seeking an experienced Gas Fireplace Technician with a strong background in diagnosing, inspecting, installing, and servicing gas fireplaces, gas inserts, log sets, and venting systems.
We value HONOR—honesty, integrity, operating at the highest level, never saying never, being on the spot, and respecting our customers, company, and ourselves. The ideal candidate shares these values and brings specialized, hands-on experience with gas hearth appliances.
This role is ideal for someone who genuinely understands the unique mechanics of gas fireplaces—including troubleshooting ignition systems, thermopiles/thermocouples, gas valves, venting issues, combustion problems, and installation standards. This is not a general HVAC or gas-plumbing position; it requires direct experience with gas fireplace/hearth systems.
What You’ll Do
- Install gas fireplaces, gas inserts, log sets, and venting components
- Perform detailed diagnostic inspections: ignition failures, pilot assemblies, burners, valves, blowers, controls, etc.
- Troubleshoot and repair gas fireplace components and safety systems
- Conduct gas-pressure checks, combustion checks, and code-compliant installations
- Educate customers on safe operation and maintenance
- Maintain accurate service records and communicate findings clearly
- Work collaboratively with the chimney service team to ensure high-quality results
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- 2 years of direct experience with gas fireplaces/hearth appliances
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills (ignition, draft/venting, mechanical, combustion)
- Ability to read installation manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics
- Commitment to safety, professionalism, and excellent customer service
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work at heights, outdoors, and in confined spaces
Preferred:
- NFI Gas Specialist certification or similar hearth-industry credentials
Benefits
- Medical & dental insurance
- Paid vacation and sick time
- Performance-based bonuses & commissions
- 401(k) savings plan
- Wealth Investment Club with free financial advisory support
- Company-provided chimney/hearth training
- ESL classes for Spanish-speaking team members
- Opportunities to participate in charity and environmental projects
