PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE
The Training Specialist conducts and monitors training activities and events as scheduled in the monthly calendar for The Children’s Shelter staff, foster/adoptive parents, and external consumers in accordance with state licensing standards, Council on Accreditation standards, and established TCS agency policy or consumer training requirements. The Training Specialist upholds the corporation’s training program in accordance with TCS philosophies, State of Texas Minimum Standards for Residential Child Care, Council on Accreditation standards, and current budgetary guidelines. The Training Specialist helps to coordinate all resources necessary for scheduled instructors/presenters providing training for foster parents or staff of The Children’s Shelter. The Training Specialist completes records of training activities and attendance, including sign-in sheets, evaluation forms, training summaries, and statistics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Mentors and assists with the training of the Training Specialist
- Provide coaching opportunities to Residential staff for trauma-based behavioral interventions
- Conducts and monitors training activities, including but not limited to New Employee Orientation, CPR, First Aid, MANDT, and other topic trainings.
- Assists with researching, writing, and creating new training and instructional materials, teaching aids (audio and visual), and other course materials using acceptable innovative methods, techniques, or styles.
- Assists with identifying external presenters and training resources.
- Responsible for setting up and breaking down tables and chairs, and checking out audiovisual equipment to other departments.
- Ensures the TCS training rooms are kept clean and orderly.
- Attends Training professional developmental meetings, seminars, or certification trainings.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Responsible for one's own personal safety, co-workers, and others who might enter the training work area.
- Demonstrates strong commitment to meeting the needs of our customers (children, community members, co-workers, donors, managers, and volunteers), in a friendly, outgoing, and professional manner.
- Responds to customers in a timely and thorough manner and takes whatever steps are necessary to ensure customer satisfaction. Prioritizes customers’ needs.
- Carry out and adhere to The Children’s Shelter policies and procedures of Trauma Informed Care.
- Other duties as assigned.
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
- Public speaking ability in a classroom setting, utilizing audiovisual training aids.
- Ability to facilitate small and large groups and develop classroom activities.

- Ability to have some technical knowledge of the use of laptops, projectors, speakers, internet, PowerPoint presentations, and use of technology-based training.
- Ability to offer training based on the different adult learning styles.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changes in training schedules.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in social services, marketing, training, or human services fields, or eight to ten years of experience in social services.
- One to two years of experience in child welfare training, adult training, or educational program development is preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) communications skills preferred (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Working knowledge of the child welfare system preferred.
- Willing to acquire a working knowledge of program operations to include the state of DFPS foster care, shelter, or residential licensing standards, national COA accreditation standards, and TCS policies and procedures.
- Computer literate; working knowledge of Microsoft Office and associated applications
- Favorable background check; Initial negative TB test
- Able to write clearly, accurately, and descriptively using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
- Skilled in organizing work in an environment with multiple challenges and priorities.
- Ability to engage and communicate effectively with persons from diverse cultures and communities.
- Must maintain training certification standards and requirements.
- Maintain drivers license with a ‘clear’ driving motor vehicle record in accordance with established guidelines of the agency and proof of automobile insurance; access to reliable and safe transportation for self.
- Willing to work evenings and/or weekends and adjust schedules during the week.
- Willing to do local travel to provide training to external customers or agencies.
- Maintain working home and/or cell phone.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily inside. The position requires a person to have the ability to teach courses requiring physical stamina, such as CPR/First Aid and the behavior intervention course of MANDT. Mobility and light lifting are required, as training presentations will be conducted in multiple facilities and equipment must be carried to these locations. Must be able to set up and break down classroom tables and chairs, depending on the seating arrangement that is needed.
