Overview

The Charleston Museum is hiring for the position of Education Coordinator. An ideal candidate has proven teaching and supervisory skills, excellent oral and written communications skills, and a demonstrated ability to organize, develop, and implement Museum educational programs. The Education Coordinator serves as the Museum’s educational liaison with local school systems and the community at large. In addition, candidates should have the demonstrated ability to work effectively with the general public and other professional staff and to direct the activities of volunteers, interns, interpreters, and subordinate staff. The Museum is looking for a motivated team player with a passion for educating learners of all ages about the cultural and natural history of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development, administration, coordination and continued improvement of the Museum’s children’s educational programs and activities.
  • Develops and presents school programs to public and private school field trips, homeschool groups, and other children’s groups at Museum sites as well as offsite.
  • Trains, schedules, and supervises Education Department staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Oversees the group reservations process and scheduling of all educational programs/activities including school group tours, programs and offsite school outreach.
  • Serves as liaison with area educators, schools, school districts and educational organizations to promote and coordinate the Museum’s educational efforts and ensures that Museum children’s programs meet state educational standards.
  • Maintains master calendar of group reservations and children’s events and ensures Museum website properly incorporates these events.
  • Oversees administrative tasks related to the Education Department such as annual budget request, budget management throughout the year, program attendance statistics, and staff leave administration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum-related subject with at least three (3) years experience as a museum educator or in an equivalent capacity.
  • Proven supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, develop, and implement Museum educational programs, including the ability to work and communicate effectively with both children and adults.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the general public and other professional staff, and to direct the activities of volunteers, docents, subordinate staff, and others as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including public speaking.
  • Strong writing skills to prepare reports, proposals, and communication materials effectively.

Pay: $70,000.00 per year
