POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Membership Development and Engagement is responsible for the continuous growth and sustainability of the Chamber’s membership base. This role focuses on high-level relationship management, including new business recruitment, membership renewals, and the sale of program sponsorships. The Director ensures members receive maximum value through a comprehensive service and retention program, achieving goals aligned with the Chamber’s Strategic Plan.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Membership Recruitment and Sponsorship Sales

  • Proactively identifies, cultivates, and converts prospective member businesses through targeted outreach, referrals, and community networking.
  • Manages and maintains a well-organized sales pipeline within the Chamber’s CRM, ensuring timely follow-up and accurate data tracking.
  • Develops and executes sponsorship sales strategies for Chamber programs, initiatives, and events.
  • Continuously refines sales messaging, proposals, and collateral to align with member needs and organizational priorities.
  • Coordinates recruitment efforts among the Board, Ambassadors and volunteers.
  • Leads new member onboarding, including orientations and training sessions to ensure members understand and fully utilize Chamber benefits and digital tools.

 

2. Member Engagement, Retention and Client Services

  • Designs and manages a structured member retention program aligned with annual renewal and engagement goals.
  • Conducts regular member check-ins, needs assessments, and satisfaction touchpoints to strengthen relationships and uncover opportunities for deeper involvement.
  • Collaborates with Chamber leadership and finance staff on invoicing, renewals, and outreach related to past-due accounts.
  • Provides staff leadership and strategic direction to the Chamber Ambassador program, ensuring consistent and effective retention outreach.
  • Tracks, coordinates, and ensures timely delivery of member benefits, including event tickets, advertising, sponsorship recognition, directory enhancements, and promotional opportunities.

 

3. Marketing, Reporting and Data Management

  • Collaborates on membership-focused email campaigns, social media content, and digital communications that support recruitment and retention goals.
  • Analyzes and reports on key membership metrics, including recruitment activity, retention rates, and engagement trends.
  • Uses CRM data to inform strategy, improve efficiency, and support data-driven decision-making.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Serves as a visible and professional representative of the Chamber at community events, ribbon cuttings, networking functions, and member visits.
  • Maintains a variable schedule, including regular attendance at early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekend events.
  • Performs light physical tasks related to events, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and a collaborative mindset while supporting overall organizational goals and additional duties as assigned.

  • Embraces a consultative, relationship-first sales philosophy focused on understanding and addressing member needs.
  • Represents the Chamber with professionalism and credibility; professional business attire is required for off-site meetings and Chamber functions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
  • Proven track record in sales, client services, account management, or business development.


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong sales and relationship management instincts with the ability to influence and build trust.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing a large portfolio with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and Google applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use CRM or member management software for tracking, reporting, and engagement.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required for daily local travel.
