The Middle School at Catlin Gabel is a dynamic learning community of 190 students and 25 teachers and staff that prepares students for ongoing education and life. A host of innovative divisional programs include community engagement, global and outdoor education, athletics, robotics, and math and science team competitions. Catlin Gabel fosters compassionate and curious citizens of the world by inspiring in every student a love of learning and the courage to take responsible action.
Reporting to the Assistant Head of School, the Head of the Middle School must be an experienced, progressive educator with a deep understanding of middle school aged children to lead and inspire its Middle School community of teachers and students. This is a senior administrator position, working closely with the Head of School and other division heads and administrators to implement Catlin Gabel’s strategic plan and educational programs. The Head of Middle School is responsible for fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment based on progressive education principles of inquiry, experience, serving the whole student, and educating for democracy.
Strategic Priorities & Essential Functions
The Head of Middle School will be a strategic partner and thoughtful leader who will help strengthen and advance Catlin Gabel’s vision and strategic plan for the Middle School. By working in close partnership with key constituencies, the Head of Middle School will prioritize the following:
- Building an environment for teachers to thrive and grow; to rely on and trust in one another and leadership.
- Examining and improving all transitions from Lower School to Middle School and Middle School to Upper School — social emotional learning, curriculum, etc. — in partnership with other Division Heads and the Assistant Head of School.
- Creating a more independent division that has its own identity while being solidly and collaboratively an integral part of Catlin Gabel’s one PS–12 School.
- Collaborating with faculty and staff to value and support the importance of middle school education.
- Directing the professional learning and evaluation programs for all Middle School faculty and staff and specific cross-divisional faculty.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- At least seven years of experience in a school environment
- At least three years of supervisory/management experience
- Knowledge of progressive education and experience as a teacher and administrator in grades 6-8 is desirable
- Experience in navigating challenging conversations about sensitive issues
