County Coordinator, Michigan Election Observation Project

The Michigan Election Observation Project (MEOP) was founded in 2026 to increase trust and transparency in elections. MEOP is fiscally sponsored by The Carter Center. Beginning in 2020, The Carter Center began efforts to support good election administration in the United States, including expanding nonpartisan observation, bolstering dispute resolution, tracking disinformation and dangerous speech, contributing to electoral reform and accessibility, and promoting principles for trusted elections. MEOP will be advised by respected Michiganders, balanced across party affiliation and region to serve as members of an Advisory Board for the project.

MEOP is seeking County Coordinators for 10 of the 15 counties where we will observe—Marquette, Muskegon, Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, Berrien, Ottawa, Kent, Washtenaw, Leelanau, Antrim, Ingham, and Wayne—chosen to reflect Michigan’s geographic, demographic, political, and administrative diversity. See below for the counties currently hiring County Coordinators.

  • Observe electoral activities as needed, which could include: logic and accuracy testing (testing of election equipment), tabulation of election results, post-election audits and certification of election results in assigned county.
  • Act as a direct supervisor to observers, ensuring observers attend trainings, understand their role as observers, receive and utilize observation materials, and abide to an assigned Observer Code of Conduct.
  • Recruit election observers in the county in line with program directives.
  • Assist with assigning observers to polling places within the county on election day.
  • Act as a liaison between MEOP and county election officials to obtain needed county-specific information (electoral procedures, dates/times for key processes, etc.).
  • Liaise with in-state observation leads, an elections logistician and, as needed, Carter Center and partner organization staff.
