Position Summary::
The Math Department Head (Grades 6–9) provides strategic and instructional leadership for the Middle School Math Department as a member of the Academic Leadership Team. This role is centered on ensuring a cohesive, aligned, and developmentally appropriate mathematics curriculum across grades 6 through 9. The Department Head is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing refinement of a clearly articulated scope and sequence that supports student growth and reflects best practices in math education for students with language-based learning differences..
This position requires a leader with deep expertise in curriculum design and mapping, a strong understanding of diverse math programs and pedagogical approaches, and the ability to coach and develop teachers effectively. The Department Head inspires a love of mathematics in both students and faculty while ensuring that instruction meets the needs of learners with language-based differences through a culturally responsive lens.
Working under the direction of the Head of Middle School, the Math Department Head supports and evaluates faculty, fosters collaboration, and ensures consistency and excellence in instructional practice. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role requires partnership with faculty, students, families, and colleagues across departments.
Responsibilities:
Curriculum and Program Leadership
- Lead and maintain a vertically aligned math curriculum (grades 6–9).
- Ensure coherence in scope, sequence, and instructional practices.
- Use curriculum mapping and program knowledge to refine and strengthen offerings.
- Leverage student data to drive continuous improvement.
- Observe, coach, and evaluate faculty on both Middle and Upper campuses.
- Deliver clear, actionable feedback to improve teaching and learning.
- Lead professional development and mentor new teachers.
- Build a collaborative, reflective department culture.
- Manage budget, materials, and instructional resources.
- Stay current with best practices in math education. Student Placement and Coordination
- Oversee math placement and sectioning with a whole-child lens
- Partner with faculty and support teams on Focus Area (FA) placements. Department Leadership and Communication
- Lead efficient, purpose-driven department meetings.
- Communicate clearly with faculty, families, and school leadership.
- Support teachers in conferences and student meetings. Teaching and Community Engagement
- Teach one section of middle school math.
- Serves as a homeroom teacher/advisor as needed.
- Represent the department at school events and programs.
