Role Description
The Care Center of Honolulu is currently seeking a Director of Staff Development (DSD) to lead and manage the facility’s clinical education and training programs.
This is a full-time, on-site role responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all staff education, orientation, and competency programs. The DSD plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting clinical excellence, and supporting staff development across departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and implement facility-wide education and training programs for clinical staff
- Coordinate and deliver new hire clinical orientation
- Develop, monitor, and maintain staff competencies in accordance with federal, state, and facility requirements
- Coordinate and track mandatory in-services for all departments (e.g., OSHA, infection control, HIPAA, abuse prevention)
- Collaborate with department leaders to develop job-specific orientation and competency validation tools
- Evaluate effectiveness of training programs and adjust curriculum, delivery methods, and materials as needed
- Maintain accurate education records and compliance documentation for audits and surveys
- Stay current with regulatory requirements (CMS, OSHA/HIOSH, DOH) and best practices in long-term care education
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives related to employee competencies and training
- Serve as a clinical education resource and consultant to leadership and staff
Qualifications Required
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Hawaii (Required)
- Minimum 1–2 years of RN experience in a skilled nursing facility (3–5 years preferred)
- Prior experience in staff development, education, or nurse leadership preferred
- Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations, infection control, and compliance standards
- Experience developing and delivering training programs and competencies
- Ability to effectively engage adult learners and support a diverse workforce
- Strong organizational, communication, and presentation skills
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn internal systems
