School Nurse
Reporting to the Head of School, The Calverton School in Huntingtown, Maryland is seeking a full-time School Nurse for the 2024-25 school year. This individual performs duties specific to nurse training to satisfy mandates from the State of Maryland and Calvert County Health Department and to provide onsite health support when students are ill, hurt, or need medication.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Evaluate students when they report to the health room to administer first aid, medication as ordered, and comfort measures if required.
- Document student medications following the State of Maryland and Calvert County Health Department regulations and guidelines.
- Provides nursing care as needed for students with chronic health problems such as diabetes, epilepsy, and asthma.
- Maintains accurate and current health information on all students.
- Communicate and collaborate with parents of students with food allergies, medical issues, and those requiring special assistance before the start of school and during the academic year.
- Follows and maintains adherence to State of Maryland regulations for immunizations of all students.
- Maintains appropriate medical and minor first aid supplies to effectively render care in the classroom and the sick room.
- Schedule and manage health screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.
- Serve as a medical resource for faculty members (flu and other shots, testing, etc.)
- Facilitate student education: handwashing, coughing and sneezing etiquette, and relevant health concerns.
- Design and implement health education curriculum.
- Invites appropriate guest speakers to speak to students on topics of interest and for informative purposes, e.g., alcohol, drugs, and social concerns.
- Assist with health and safety responsibilities and training of staff during summer camp.
Qualifications:
- Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited College of Nursing (RN degree)
- State of Maryland Nursing License or ability to obtain before start.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
- 4-5 years in an acute or outpatient setting with a Pediatric focus.
- Proficient user of technology.
- Collaborative and effective communication in working with students, teachers, administrators, and families.
- An ability to contribute positively to a student-centered learning environment.
- Must pass Federal and State background checks along with MSDE Employment History Review.
