The Builders, a chapter of the AGC convened a Safety Task Force comprised of industry leaders to build a recommendation for a future-focused safety service model that maximizes member value, aligns with industry best practices, and strengthens the ability of The Builders to serve as a trusted partner in advancing safety in commercial construction. The first step of the recommendations calls for us to find the right leader to take our Safety Department to the next level. This is a leadership opportunity for a safety professional ready to step into influence early to help build systems while maintaining visibility and impact. The service center for the region is in Kansas City, Missouri, and the role will report to the President.


The right candidate must be able to lead and collaborate with industry experts at member companies, industry partners and regional OSHA leadership. The director must be a self-starter and highly capable of developing and implementing safety strategies in construction. This position will be highly visible within the Safety Industry in the region and will be responsible for leading association activities to support excellence in Safety Culture.



Director responsibilities:
  • Manage partnerships with an external team of safety, health and environmental consultants responsible for providing OSHA, MSHA, EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers consulting and training services for clients.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing, Events and Membership Departments to market and sell safety, health and environmental services.
  • Serve as staff liaison for the Midwest Construction Safety Conference, OSHA Build Safe Partnership Program and Construction Safety Group of Kansas City.
  • Engage and maintain professional relationships with industry leaders from trade associations, unions, state and federal regulatory agencies, universities, career centers, Missouri Common Ground Alliance, ASSP, BCSP, AIHA, and NSC.
  • Oversee administration of AGC of America and association safety and health award programs.
  • Occasional speaking engagements as required.
  • Collaborate with the Accounting and Administration Vice President to manage budgets for Safety, Health and Environmental Services.
  • Responsible for the compilation and submission of Board of Directors reports for Safety, Health and Environmental Services Department.  

        

Member-facing responsibilities:
  • Apply a “member first” approach to the development and delivery of safety services.
  • In collaboration with the Education and Training Department, responsible for curriculum development and scheduling and/or conducting educational training programs.
  • Assist clients with OSHA, MSHA and EPA inspections; informal conferences; and citation abatement and citation contest.
  • Be accountable for keeping clients up to date on important OSHA, MSHA and EPA regulatory changes by authoring and distributing periodic bulletins, e-News and magazine content.
  • Review, develop and provide written OSHA, MSHA, EPA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and risk control programs.
  • Conduct and appropriately document on-site safety, health and environmental audits.


Director skills and preferences:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, preferably in safety management, industrial hygiene, environmental science, adult education or construction management. 
  • A minimum of 3-7 years applicable experience in construction safety, construction  management.
  • Preferred to currently possess, or be able to possess, Missouri Teacher’s Certification – Voc. 1, OSHA authorized outreach trainer, Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) designation such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or hold American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) designation such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Fluency in relevant terminology of construction field and knowledge of organizational structure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Professionalism to maintain member and association confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills to independently complete tasks that support organizational and team goals.
  • Availability and capability to travel/drive for business purposes.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding systems and walk construction sites.


Location: The position is based in Kansas City, Missouri and includes frequent travel to The Builders multiple service centers and client sites.
