The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on East 62nd Street (Lower and Middle Schools) and East 64th Street (Upper School) in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 470 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.

Position Description

The Browning School is looking for Substitute Teachers in our Lower and Middle Schools - Grades K-8. The position is per diem as needed during the 2025-2026 school year. Compensation for this position is per diem at the rate of $175 per day.

Key Responsibilities

Lower and Middle School substitute teachers will provide support and coverage to Lower and Middle School classrooms in the event of a teacher absence. Among other things, they will be tasked with:

  • Supervising a warm, safe, and well-managed classroom environment
    • Regular LS/MS substitute hours are 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m
  • Supporting students and implementing lessons plans provided by the teacher
  • Covering scheduled duties such as lunch and recess supervision
  • Collaborating professionally and collegially with other teachers on the grade level and specialist teachers
  • Heartily contributing to the school community by modeling and upholding The Browning School’s mission and values

A successful substitute teacher will possess all or most of the following qualifications:

  • Experience teaching or working with students ages 5-14
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Reliable and resourceful organizational and communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • A good sense of humor and love for children and teaching
