Foreign Policy at Brookings
Foreign Policy at Brookings is a leading center of policy-relevant scholarship exploring the rapidly re-ordering geopolitics of the major powers, and the disordering relations among states and transnational actors. Position Location:This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

The Development Manager works with the Senior Director of Development, scholars and administrators, and program leadership to assist with the development and implementation fundraising strategies for Foreign Policy at Brookings (FP), a $15-$20 million program. The Development Manager will focus on building and strengthening relationships with major individual donors and identifying individual donor prospects. The Development Manager will assist with creating and executing an annual plan to increase individual prospects and improve donor experiences through relationship-building, offering engagement opportunities, sending creative communications, increasing trust through consistent outreach and sharing FP’s impact. The Development Manager maintains a portfolio of individual major donors and prospects. The Development Manager maintains a detailed awareness of institutional policies and guidelines, as well as professional best practices, and operates consistently within this framework, and plays a critical role as liaison between FP Assistant/Associate Directors, FP scholars, FP senior administration, and donors.
Donor Stewardship and Cultivation (40%)
- In coordination with FP’s Senior Director of Development, sets formal goals for stewardship, recognition, and cultivation activities with individual donors.
- Assists with developing and implementing annual action plan for donor management and care, including stewardship, cultivation, and appreciation activities.
- Coordinates logistics for external FP donor cultivation and stewardship events.
- Collaborates with development colleagues in other programs and central office to expand and strengthen relationship with donors through events, activities, and other opportunities.
- Identifies existing opportunities to leverage donor participation and engagement.
Portfolio Development and Prospect Identification (30%)
- Identifies potential major donors who can be added to pipeline.
- Collaborates with central Development research team to qualify donors capable of making five and six-figure gifts.
- Identifies and tracks new prospects through referrals, research, and outreach.
Donor Communication and Collaboration (30%)
- Manages a calendar of donor communications across giving levels, looking for opportunities to leverage content across audiences.
- Monitors FP publications, events, and travel schedules to identify opportunities for engagement with donors and prospects.
- Working independently and directly with Senior Director of Development, develops a donor specific / Foreign Policy Leadership Council touchpoint schedule.
- Drafts, edits and finalizes donor acknowledgements, and other personalized communications to donors.
- Oversees the development of FP donor materials, impact reports, and annual highlights by working in coordination with associate directors and communications team members.
- Ensures regular communication with FP and its research centers regarding opportunities to leverage existing briefings, activities, and other events.
- Synthesizes information across multiple centers and programs to highlight information that aligns with donor interest.
- Maintains comprehensive donor relationship information in Blackbaud NXT database, including updating donor records, compiling biographical information, event participation information, data entry, and pulling reports/queries.
Education/Experience Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree is required; a degree in international relations, foreign policy, and background fundraising in academic or think tank setting strongly preferred. Minimum five years of relevant fundraising and high-level stewardship experience with major individual donors is required. Professional experience in a non-profit organization is required. Must be currently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
Knowledge/Skills Requirements:
Technical skills: Professional skills in philanthropy and non-profit fundraising is required. Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with individual stewardship and cultivation strategies, major giving cycles, retention strategies, and communication and engagement metrics. Familiarity with and knowledge of public policy research, or international relations issues is strongly preferred. Familiarity with or knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Sharepoint, and Office 365 is required; familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or Blackbaud product is preferred.
Writing and editing skills: Superior writing and editing skills are required, including proven ability to conceive and write proposals and personalized communications to high-profile donors in clear, precise, and concise language.
Interpersonal skills: Ability to interact confidently and collegially with a range of individuals, including high-profile individuals, is required. Discretion and mature judgment are required, as well as a sense of initiative and entrepreneurial spirit. Excellent oral and written English skills; professional communication skills; ability to work well in a fast-paced setting are required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and manage up, down, and laterally in a collegial environment are required.
