JOB DESCRIPTION
POST: School Nurse
SCHOOL: British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park
Job Purpose:
The school nurse role is to assess the health needs of students, provide care to sick students, monitor students with chronic illnesses, develop and implement emergency care. In addition, the school nurse is to provide health education to students and staff as necessary. Please note that this role is only needed when students are in session so comes with up to 13 weeks' a year of vacation!
Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks
Clinical Practice
- Attend to acutely sick children and provide first aid/emergency care as necessary to students and staff.
- Refer students and staff for further medical care when needed.
- Provide care to children with chronic medical conditions/needs.
- Maintain and evaluate student health data via collected physical and emergency contact forms.
- Develop school health plans for students with chronic medical conditions.
- Administer medication as appropriate and with necessary parental permission and documentation.
- Ensure all allergies and medical conditions are properly documented and up to date action plans are on file for each of these students, along with necessary medication.
- Make appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
- Provide or makes referrals for vision and hearing screenings as required by state.
Administration
- Ensure proper medical documentation is collected for all students, including state physicals, immunization, dental/eye exams, and vision/hearing screenings as required by state.
- Document all illnesses and accidents in the RIVO system.
- Ensure nurse’s office is stocked with necessary supplies.
- Checks and ensures proper stocking of first aid kits in building.
- Ensure all student medications in nurse’s office or classrooms are not expired and communicating to parents when due.
- Help develop and update school health policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by school, such as printing, assisting office staff as needed, and assisting the admissions department with various tasks.
- Relieve receptionist for breaks if necessary.
- Track all allergies and medical conditions electronically.
Teaching
- Develop student health education topics and present to targeted students in each key stage.
- Identify needed areas of health education for teachers in each key stage and develop health presentations and present on identified topics.
- Provide teaching to students, parents and staff regarding illnesses, injuries, and medications as necessary.
Communication
- Inform parents or guardians of any medical treatment carried out in school or of a student illness.
- Inform teachers of student illnesses or injuries as appropriate and necessary.
- Communicate to parents regarding incidents of communicable diseases in their child’s year group.
- Reach out to parents of children with allergies or medical conditions to ensure we have most up to date information and procedures to follow, along with any necessary student emergency medications.
- Inform the Principal of any parental or student concerns.
- Liaising with medical professionals regarding the return of students with ongoing medical treatment or who are recovering from illness.
Discipline, Health and Safety
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of Nord Anglia Education and the school and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorized to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities elsewhere.
- Serve as a resources for students and staff in matters regarding health and safety.
