Contract Position | California, MD (Hybrid)
The BayNet is looking for talented writers and contributors with different interests, backgrounds and areas of expertise to help expand our coverage across Southern Maryland and surrounding counties.
We’re not looking for every writer to cover everything. We want people who can bring their own knowledge and interests to our newsroom and help us tell stories we may not be covering yet.
Whether your expertise is in politics and local government, local history, food, business, sports, outdoors, education, arts and entertainment, the environment, community life or something entirely different, we want to hear what you could bring to The BayNet.
What You'll Do
- Write engaging articles and features for a Southern Maryland audience
- Pitch original story ideas related to your interests or expertise
- Interview local residents, businesses, organizations and experts
- Research topics and ensure information is accurate
- Collaborate with our editorial team to develop stories
What We're Looking For
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Knowledge, experience or a strong interest in a particular subject
- Curiosity and an eye for interesting local stories
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Journalism experience and AP style knowledge are a plus, but not required

Hi, I’m Katie Callander, Publisher of The BayNet. I joined the team in 2022 as a part-time graphic designer and discovered a passion for writing and local storytelling along the way.
That experience is one reason I believe great writers can come from many different backgrounds. As we grow our team, I’m looking for people who can bring their own interests, expertise and ideas to our coverage. If there’s a topic you know well or an area of Southern Maryland you think deserves more attention, I’d love to hear from you.
Job Types: Full-time, Contract
Pay: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20.0 – 40.0 per week
