Vice President of Construction
Position Overview
The Vice President of Construction is responsible for leading all field construction operations, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to defined quality standards. This role provides strategic oversight while driving operational execution across multiple communities or regions. The VP will partner closely with executive leadership, land, purchasing, and sales teams to align construction performance with overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Oversee all construction activities from start to finish, including scheduling, budgeting, and quality control
- Establish and enforce construction processes, standards, and best practices
- Ensure consistent execution across all communities and projects
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Construction Managers, Superintendents, and field teams
- Build a strong culture of accountability, performance, and continuous improvement
- Participate in hiring, training, and succession planning
Project Execution
- Ensure homes are delivered on schedule and within budget
- Monitor cycle times and implement improvements to increase efficiency
- Address and resolve construction challenges proactively
Quality & Customer Satisfaction
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and product quality
- Partner with customer service teams to ensure a strong homeowner experience
- Reduce warranty issues through proactive quality control measures
Financial Oversight
- Manage construction budgets and cost controls
- Collaborate with purchasing and finance to optimize cost efficiency
- Analyze performance metrics and implement cost-saving initiatives
Vendor & Trade Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors
- Ensure trade partners meet performance, safety, and quality expectations
- Assist in trade negotiations and capacity planning
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce all safety standards and regulatory requirements
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building regulations
- Promote a culture of safety across all job sites
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with land development, purchasing, sales, and executive leadership
- Provide input on product design, value engineering, and feasibility
- Align construction operations with company growth strategy
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of direct experience with a PRODUCTION HOMEBUILDER
- Proven leadership experience overseeing multiple communities or regions
- Strong understanding of residential construction processes, scheduling, and cost control
- Demonstrated ability to lead and scale construction teams
- Experience improving cycle times, quality metrics, and operational efficiency
- Knowledge of local building codes, safety regulations, and permitting processes
- Strong financial acumen and ability to manage budgets
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field
- Experience in high-volume production homebuilding environments
- Track record of implementing process improvements or scaling operations
