Position Summary
We are seeking an organized, personable, and calm-under-pressure House Manager to oversee all Front of House (FOH) operations during performances. The House Manager is the "face" of the theater for our patrons, responsible for ensuring a safe, welcoming, and smooth experience from the moment the doors open until the last guest leaves. This role is critical in bridging the gap between the audience and the production team, managing volunteer ushers, and handling any patron concerns with grace and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Show & Volunteer Management
- Arrive prior to house opening to inspect the lobby, restrooms, and seating areas for cleanliness, safety, and proper setup.
- Train, brief, and supervise volunteer ushers on their specific duties, including ticket scanning, seating policies, and emergency procedures.
- Coordinate with the Box Office staff to resolve ticketing issues and determine the final house count.
- Communicate with the Stage Manager regarding house opening, holding the house, and intermission timings.
During Performance
- Manage the flow of patrons into the theater, ensuring efficient seating to start the show on time.
- Enforce theater policies regarding photography, recording, and etiquette, etc.
- Monitor the lobby and house during the performance to handle late seating, temperature complaints, or disruptive behavior.
- Lead the response to any medical emergencies or safety incidents, completing necessary incident reports.
Post-Show & Closing
- Oversee the orderly exit of patrons.
- Supervise the cleanup of the house and lobby (collecting programs, trash disposal, etc.).
- Secure the Front of House area, ensuring all lights are off and doors are locked.
- Submit a brief House Report after every shift detailing attendance numbers, volunteer performance, and any facilities or patron issues.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: Previous experience in customer service, hospitality, or event management is preferred but not required. Prior theater or Front of House experience is a strong plus.
- Communication: Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to instruct volunteers and interact positively with diverse patrons, including children and families.
- Problem Solving: Ability to think quickly and remain calm in fast-paced or stressful situations.
- Availability: Must be available to work flexible hours, primarily evenings and weekends, aligning with the production schedule.
- Certifications: CPR/First Aid and TIPS certification is desirable but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (3-4 hours per shift).
- Ability to lift or move up to 25 lbs (moving programs, stanchions, or concessions supplies).
- Ability to navigate stairs and low-light environments safely.
Compensation
This is an hourly position contractor. Compensation is $20 per hour.
