Currently recruiting a Ultrasound Technician to work at Malcom Grow Medical Center, Joint Base Andrews, MD. The Ultrasound Technician provides care for our nations active duty service members, their families, and retirees. The Ultrasound Technician is a full-time position, 80 hours per two weeks., Full benefits, including 17 days paid vacation/sick leave and 10 paid Federal holidays.



DUTIES OF THE ULTRASOUND TECHNICIAN:
  • Performs advanced sonographic scanning on all anatomical areas for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including biceps tendon, achilles tendon, patella tenon, superficial musculature, superficial lesion, hernia, etc.
  • Assists invasive diagnostic procedures such as cyst aspiration and ultrasound-guided tissue sampling.
  • Operate and maintain daily high-level disinfection device (Trophon) of all ultrasound probes.
  • Communicate timely and effectively with radiologist any abnormal ultrasound findings and clearly document these findings on the technologist work sheet.
  • Collaborate with co-workers in the Ultrasound section and Radiology department to proactively seek out opportunities for quality & process improvements.
  • Will participate in on-call duties for emergent ultrasounds on ECC and/or OR patients, in accordance with departmental policies. On-call duties include response time of 60 minutes and immediate accessibility by telephone and/or pager.
  • Images to be read remotely will be transmitted by the sonographer, according to department policies, utilizing PACS. Technologist will contact remote radiologist with the exam impression prior to leaving the facility in the event more imaging is requested/required.
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, and provide appropriate care. Correctly position the patient for the examination and adjust necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
  • Operate ultrasound scanners. Operate the linear, sector, and endovaginal probes as well as pulse and color Doppler capabilities of provided scanners.
  • Receive and interpret requests or instructions for diagnostic ultrasound scans;perform assigned quality control checks of the ultrasound scanners.
  • Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasonic examinations including but not limited to: obstetrical sonography, including imaging of all fetal anatomy in order to obtain accurate dating and growth parameters and evaluate for fetal abnormalities and problems with the pregnancy;pelvic sonography, including imaging of all pelvic anatomy to attain accurate assessment of suspected pathology;and endovaginal sonography exams to obtain accurate assessment of suspected pelvic pathology;abdominal sonography to include all major organs and systems of the abdomen;small parts sonography to include scans of the breast, thyroid and testicles;and limited vascular sonography to include carotid, aortic and lower/upper extremity venous duplex scans.
  • Performs numerous complex sonographic scanning on all anatomical areas for in-utero, neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Assists radiologist and/or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as biopsies, aspirations and intraoperative localization of lesions, or other similar procedures.
  • Identify abnormalities during testing and determine need for additional scans of affected area.
  • Recognize anatomic variants and determine which other area(s) of the body should be scanned.
  • Use a detailed understanding of diseases of anatomy to accomplish effective ultrasound scanning.
  • Advise the physician of results of the examination and provide them with a preliminary diagnosis.
  • Notify physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention.
  • Maintain and clean ultrasound equipment on a regular basis in accordance with department standards.
  • Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required to ultrasound examinations.
  • Recommend necessary repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
  • Make minor adjustments on equipment. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment, set up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed.
  • Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
  • Perform administrative duties to include but not limited to: print ultrasound work schedules/ arrive/depart patients;answer phone/schedule patients for exams;utilize CHCS/HAIMS/MRS.
  • Willingness to participate in cross- training activities within the department.
  • As registered sonographer, HCWs assist the Diagnostic Sonography training platform with training and student assessments. The responsibilities of a trainer include but are not limited to:
    • Trains and assesses staff and student competence
    • Explain pathology and relevant anatomy
    • Monitor appropriateness of care and completeness of examination requests.
    • Provide Feedback to students on ultrasound studies
    • Communicate issues with course supervisor
    • Complete initial and annual preceptor refresher training provided by CS.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ULTRASOUND TECHNICIAN:
  • Degree/Education: Current registration as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Certifications: The HCW shall hold and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications using American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines. Members must present proof of current certification(s) through American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Computer-based training does not constitute fulfilling the training requirements. Must maintain currency at NO cost to the government. Recertification is NOT provided by the MTF.
  • Licensure/Registration: Current registration as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Board Certification: None
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 year of full-time experience within the last 3 years in a setting corresponding to the requirements of the task order.
  • U.S. Citizen (required for access to Government computer systems)
