What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project and Forensic Case Associate position at The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team?
Project and Forensic Case Associate
The organization: The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that applies forensic science to the investigation of human rights violations and humanitarian problems. EAAF formed in 1984 in order to investigate the disappearances under the last Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983). Since its founding, at the request of families of victims of human rights violations, civil society organizations, local and international tribunals, as well as truth commissions and other mechanisms of transitional justice, EAAF has worked in more than 55 countries throughout the world conducting direct investigations, providing training, and working to improve forensic public policy at the national, regional and global level. EAAF maintains its headquarters in Buenos Aires, a team in Mexico City, a small office in New York, and provides training and workshops all over the world.
The position: We seek an organized, detail-oriented, highly responsible individual who is interested in human rights issues and has experience working in a professional office to join the organization. In conjunction with the Director of North and Central America programs and appropriate colleagues in New York and Mexico City, the Program and Forensic Case Associate is responsible for coordinating tracking of forensic cases, largely of missing migrants traveling north along the Central America-Mexico-US corridor as well as local disappearances within Mexico. The Associate also provides support for other EAAF programs across North and Central America, including the inter-organizational relationships of our Forensic Border Coalition, a group that EAAF co-founded with forensic scientists, scholars, and human rights partner organizations working to address barriers to identifying remains of missing migrants found along the US-Mexico border. The work involves assisting with documentation and task management for forensic cases, maintaining precise information tracking, scheduling meetings, and communicating with forensic and genetic laboratories, medical examiners offices, and external organizations to assemble and provide needed information. In addition, all staff in the NY Office work as a team to provide support to the organization and project operations and coordinate regularly with team members working in Mexico City and Buenos Aires. This position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual who can bring energy to resolving unforeseen needs, exercise quality control over data, and communicate with sensitivity with a range of people regarding cases that touch on human rights issues, forensic science, and missing persons. Abilities to work as a self-starter and as a member of a multi-location team, to manage multiple deadlines, and to treat all cases with the highest level of care and dignity are essential.
Responsibilities include:
- Tracking of forensic case information: keeping detailed records of case developments, coordinating shipments and processing of biological samples with DNA laboratories, and following up on laboratory deadlines.

- Communicating with the offices of medical examiners located along the U.S.-Mexico border
- Editing and proofreading outgoing materials (letters, reports, etc.) as needed
- Assisting with office email, mail, phone, messages, and other administrative tasks as part of the NY office team, including communicating appropriately with peer organizations, consulates and family members
