We are seeking to hire a Shift Supervisor for the Community Connections program. This position will serve individuals and staff who are working in the Joplin, MO area.  
 

  

What will my day-to-day responsibilities look like?  

The Shift Supervisor for the Community Connections department is a semi-professional role focused on team-based management and supervision of staff and individuals in community-based settings, providing support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to engage in their scheduled daily activities. 
 

Supervised by a Program Supervisor, Director, or other professional staff, the Shift Supervisor is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative while adhering to established policies and procedures. 
 

Training and support for individuals includes:  

Daily life skills of:  

  • Cooking  

  • Cleaning  

  • Hygiene  

  • Purchasing of groceries  

  • Food preparation  

  • Medication administration  

  • Behavioral care  

  • Community participation  

  • Management of personal funds  

  

Training and support for staff:  

  • Helping implement personal plans (the story of the individual you’re serving including their history, goals, and achievements)  

  • Implementing and communicating directives   

  • Maintaining necessary records and reports  

  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment

What do I need to be qualified for this position?  

  • Diploma from an accredited high school or equivalent.      

  • Six months experience providing direct care, treatment, and habilitation in the human service field.   

  • Experience providing direct care, treatment and habilitation to individuals who have intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and/or behavior disorders is preferred

SHIFT SUPERVISOR COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Definition

The Shift Supervisor for the Community Connections department is a semi-professional position that will work on a team in the management and supervision of staff and individuals located  in a community based settings where they  provide supports to individuals with intellectual challenges and other developmental disabilities in completing their scheduled daily activities.

An employee in this class provides assistance and training to assigned individuals served in dressing, bathing, personal hygiene, house cleaning, laundry, and other activities of daily living.  Additional responsibilities include assisting with the purchasing of groceries, training in food preparation, assisting in the management of personal funds, and encouraging active members of their community program.

In the absence of the Program Supervisor, the Shift Supervisor functions as a supervisor for an assigned team in implementing and coordinating all developmental activities in the provision of active habilitation programming including, but not limited to, improving client self-help skills, economic self-sufficiency, socialization, leisure skills, mobility, communication, etc.

Work involves overall responsibility for the health and well-being of individuals served, insuring staff coverage, reporting and recording observations, circulating and implementing directives, and for maintaining necessary records and reports. Attend quarterly/annual planning meetings with treatment team if necessary.

Supervision is received from a Program Supervisor, Director, or other professional staff members; however, the employee is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative within the limit of established policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions

Serves as an ambassador of the mission and purpose of The Arc of the Ozarks

Assures the safety and well-being of individuals served by the Arc and the rights of individuals served by the Arc.

 

Checks to see if the home is safe and clean according to Arc standards of care and teaches individuals how to maintain their home.

Personnel Management

Assists the Program Supervisor, schedules staff in accordance with mandated staff to individual ratio; makes work assignments, inspects and evaluates the work of subordinates, reviews and instructs personnel in the care, treatment and habilitation of persons served.

Assists in the orientation of new employees and participates in the continued in-service training and practical instruction of personnel.

In the absence of the Program Supervisor and Team Manager, supervises direct support staff and evaluates performance in accordance with established agency policy.

Creates a pleasant work place for individuals served and staff.  Will also create solutions for crisis situations according to Arc policy and crisis prevention and intervention training.

Circulates and implements directives of the Team Manager and Program Supervisor and maintains necessary records and reports.

Assists the Program Supervisor with staff training and scheduling

Assists the Program Supervisor and Team Manager in supervising the application of basic health care for individuals served; administers medications to individuals served in accordance with agency policies and procedures and after certification by Missouri Department of Mental Health and Arc officials.  Assists with physicians' appointments as assigned; assuring that documentation is correct.

Reports rule infractions, complaints from individual’s served/parents/ guardians/employees, and related incidents to Program Supervisor or Team Manager.

Client Support

Provides support to persons served in dressing, bathing, personal hygiene, house cleaning, laundry, transfers, lifts, positioning/repositioning, other activities of daily living, and community outings.

Assists individuals served in securing and effectively managing funds; ensuring the individual’s choice of how these funds are spent, budgeting, etc.

Assists with the purchasing of groceries, medical, and cleaning supplies; assist in the preparation and training in food preparation in compliance with dietary needs; supervises meal activities and assists individuals served as necessary.

Provides assistance and planning to individuals served in becoming as mobile in their community environment as possible.

Assists the individuals requiring supports in participating in varied meaningful vocational, domestic, and leisure activities in the community of their choosing.

Assists in providing basic health care for persons served; takes temperature, pulse, blood   pressure, respiration, and applies simple dressings when necessary.

Administers oral, rectal, vaginal, optic, ophthalmic, nasal, and topical medications, after    certification by The Arc of the Ozarks and Missouri State officials.

Observes, reports and records changes in the physical condition, behavioral response, and emotional status of each individual served and progress on outcomes listed in the personal plan. Prepares and/or supervises the preparation of necessary records and reports.

Acts as a direct support staff and demonstrates direct support activities to staff through practical instruction, participates in the continued in-service training.

Program Oversight, Design and Development

Implements outcomes and strategies of individual personal plans under the supervision of the Team Manager and Program Supervisor; provides supports as identified in the personal plans; contributes observations to the individual’s team; attends review meetings when assigned.

Assists the Team Manager in maintaining an inventory of grocery, food, and medical supplies.

Takes appropriate action in case of fire and/or disaster.  Encourages the development and maintenance of a safe environment for individuals served in a home setting including developing plans for evacuation assistance in case of emergency, using proper on-call notification.

Documentation and Quality Assurance

Implements outcomes and strategies of individual personal plans under the supervision of the Team Manager and Program Supervisor; provides supports as identified in the personal plans; contributes observations to the individual’s team; attends review meetings when assigned.

Completes or supervises all monthly filing; monthly summary sheets, MARs, nurse consultations, accident/injury/incident reports, etc.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  1. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion.
  2. Ability to work with and respect persons with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities.
  3. Ability to work varied and flexible hours, to accept and adapt to changes in assignments, methods, policies, etc.
  4. Knowledge of basic non-professional techniques used in assisting in the care, treatment and habilitative programming for individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities.
  5. Knowledge of elementary behavior support techniques.
  6. Knowledge of the principles of management and supervision of personnel.
  7. Ability to supervise, review and evaluate the work of assigned personnel.
  8. Ability to implement and supervise individual and group habilitation programs designed to improve each individual served’ s self-help skills, economic self-sufficiency, socialization, leisure skills, mobility, communication and personal health.
  9. Ability to accurately report, record observations, and supervise these activities.
  10.  Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  11.  Ability to stand, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs., and pull and push items.
  12.  Ability to maintain a record of punctuality and attendance.
  13.  Ability to be organized and efficient to complete all listed duties in a timely manner.  The Shift Supervisor will also need to follow the chain of command and be able to ask for help when needed.
  14. A licensed and insured driver, with ability to obtain a Missouri Class E driver license

 

 

 

 

Minimum Experience and Training Qualifications

 

Diploma from an accredited high school or equivalent. 

 

Six months’ experience providing direct assistance in the care, treatment and habilitation in the human service field preferred. 

 

Experience in the providing assistance in the care, treatment and habilitation to individuals who have developmental disabilities is preferred.

The Shift Supervisor should have outstanding critical thinking skills and effective communication qualities as demonstrated by success in prior experience in a human service position or leadership role.

 

Must have the capacity to cultivate and maximize individual and team relationships.  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build authentic relationships with clients, guardians, staff, and all internal and external stakeholders is valued.

 

The Shift Supervisor must demonstrate the ability to establish rapport, effectively communicates, and cultivates a positive work culture with not only their team, but staff from other departments, guardians, individuals served, internal and external stakeholders.

 

Demonstrates empathy and compassion, effective conflict resolution, exceptional communication and follow-up skills.

 

The Shift Supervisor must be adaptable and able to work successfully in a fast-paced environment with a strong work ethic.  They are able to delegate effectively and demonstrate solid time management skills.

 

The Shift Supervisor should be open to feedback, possess a growth mindset, and a willingness for learning opportunities in order to better themselves and The Arc of the Ozarks.
