Direct Support Associate
Position Status: Part - Time - up to 20 hours a week
Location: Morganton and Lenoir, NC
Education Requirements: Candidate must have a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
Experience Requirements: Candidate must be a motivated team player, flexible, creative, dependable and reliable. Candidate should have related experience in providing direct supports. Qualified applicants must be 18 years or older, have a current driver’s license, reliable transportation and are able to pass background check.
The Arc of NC is seeking a passionate, hardworking, self-motivated individual to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Asheville area. This is a part time position with a flexible schedule.
About the Individual You’ll Support:
Join a creative and community‑minded pair of individuals in their 20s who live in the Morganton area and are eager to keep growing their independence. They would love help identifying volunteer opportunities, taking various creative classes, and getting out to shop for the household. They have also taken the next steps in employment and would benefit from a supportive teammate to help them explore career options, build stamina, and strengthen social skills when they get to that point.
In addition to this ongoing support, the role includes an back-up staffing component when schedules align. This may involve filling in for an after‑school shift with a 1915i student between 3:30pm and 7:30pm, as well as assisting a young adult male with community integration during daytime hours (typically 9am–2pm, depending on his variable work schedule and availability). These shifts offer meaningful one‑on‑one time focused on safety, engagement, and helping each person stay connected to their goals.

Key Responsibilities
- The Support Associate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build a trusting relationship that balances predictability with the introduction of new experiences
- Experience supporting individuals with autism or similar neurodevelopmental conditions is preferred
- Candidate will be dependable, proactive, and committed to helping the individual build life skills, social confidence, and community belonging through consistent and person-centered support.
- Promote Community Integration: Encourage her participation in social, recreational, and community activities that align with her interests and strengths.
- Skill Development: Teach and reinforce life skills, coping mechanisms, and self-advocacy techniques tailored to her needs.
- Health and Safety: Maintain a safe and structured environment, proactively addressing potential risks and challenges
- Documentation: Accurately complete daily notes, progress reports, and other required documentation.
