Role Description The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role at THE ARC OF BALTIMORE is a full-time, on-site position based in Baltimore, MD. The DSP provides person-centered support to individuals, assisting with daily living activities such as personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, and household tasks. This role includes supporting community integration by accompanying individuals to appointments, social activities, and employment or day programs, while promoting independence and self-advocacy. The DSP documents services and progress accurately, follows care plans and safety procedures, and communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, families, and other service providers. The position requires reliability, compassion, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all individuals served.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to provide direct support with daily living activities, personal care, and household tasks in a respectful and person-centered manner.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills to build trust and collaborate with individuals, families, and team members.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation, follow individualized plans, and comply with health, safety, and confidentiality standards.
- Capacity to support community inclusion, including accompanying individuals to appointments, activities, and programs while promoting independence.
- Reliability and adaptability, including the ability to work assigned full-time schedules, which may include evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training or coursework in human services, social work, or related fields is beneficial.
- Previous experience supporting individuals with disabilities, behavioral health needs, or in a healthcare or residential setting is preferred but not required.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the role, which may include lifting, transferring, and extended periods of standing or walking.
- Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and ability to use agency or personal vehicle for work-related transportation if required by the position.
- Successful completion of background checks, reference checks, and any required pre-employment trainings or certifications (such as CPR/First Aid) as required by the organization and regulations.
