JOB TITLE: Classroom Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Children's Services

REPORTS TO: Lead Teacher, Center Manager, and Director of Children's Services

The Classroom Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in all aspects of classroom operation, helping children progress in all developmental areas and providing a safe, nurturing learning environment. The Classroom Assistant works closely with the Lead Teacher to maintain daily routines and ensure quality care for children developing typically as well as children with special needs.

· Ability to assist with classroom instruction and activities

· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with teachers and families

· Ability to supervise and interact with children during structured and unstructured times

· Knowledge of child development and ability to facilitate learning through play

· Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation

· Cultural competency and ability to work with diverse groups of individuals, including persons with developmental disabilities

· Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations

· Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain clean, orderly, and safe classroom environment

· Must be 21 years of age or older

· Documentation of three (3) references and known in the community to be of good reputation

· Documentation of satisfactory criminal record check per LA. R.S. 5:5871

· Must be able to write on a 10th grade level

· Satisfactory certification of Community CPR

· Must provide health records including TB test, and documentation of good health and physically able to care for children prior to beginning work and at least every 3 years thereafter

· Ability to lift children under the age of 6 years and the ability to get down to and up from the floor

· Adheres to The Arc Caddo-Bossier Policy and Procedures and Core Values

· Satisfies all pertinent staff requirements as specified by licensing and funding agencies, and Children's Services Manuals

· Demonstrates an attitude of cooperation with and respect for all guests, children, parents, families and co-workers

· Respects all children in the program and their family's right to confidentiality

· Participates in designated staff training and furnishes necessary documentation as directed

· Willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of children and families

· Willing to participate in Louisiana Pathways and Quality Star systems and achieve a satisfactory score in order for the Center to maintain our stars

· Assist the Lead Teacher with classroom duties as directed

· Help children progress in all developmental areas

· Provide individual and small group activities with children and actively facilitate learning through play

· Supervise and interact with children during less structured times such as exploratory play, toileting, lunch, snack, and outdoor play

· Respond to the class as the situation dictates in emergency situations

· Assist the Lead Teacher in plans and preparations for classroom activities

· Assist the Lead Teacher in maintaining the classroom and materials in clean, orderly and safe manner

· Maintain any paperwork required daily in the teacher's absence

· Be familiar with each child's developmental levels and appropriate activities to facilitate each

· Follow the daily schedule provided and assume the leadership of the classroom in the absence of the Lead Teacher

· Ensure, along with the Lead Teacher, proper storage and return of any medication administered to children in classroom

· Respond quickly in a soothing and tender manner to cries or calls of distress

· Respond consistently to needs for food and comfort

· Adhere to all policies and procedures, including those addressing discipline, child abuse/neglect and confidentiality

· Keep Center Manager informed of materials and supplies on hand and the need for replenishing

· Adhere to professional code of conduct which includes no elaborate jewelry at work, no long fingernails which present health and safety risks to children, and no use of cell phones while in the classroom

· Perform specific duties in addition to any related tasks as required by the Center Manager or Director of Children's Services, such as Back-to-School/Spaghetti Supper night, Tree Trimming night, and faculty meetings

· Ability to work 242 days per calendar

· Ability to lift children under the age of 6 years

· Ability to get down to and up from the floor regularly

· Ability to sit or stand for extended periods

· Ability to use both hands in fine and gross manipulation

· Ability to see well enough to read handwritten and typewritten material

· Ability to hear and speak well enough to communicate effectively

· Ability to handle a variety of repetitive tasks in a classroom environment

Pay: $10.00 - $11.50 per hour
