Chief Executive Officer

The Animal Protective Foundation Glenville, New York

The Animal Protective Foundation (APF) is seeking an inspiring, mission-driven leader to serve as its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is a rare opportunity to lead a respected animal welfare organization guiding its people, programs, and partnerships into a strong, sustainable future while making a tangible difference for companion animals and the communities the APF touches. The incoming CEO will also help guide an active capital campaign which is an exciting opportunity to build on the organization’s momentum and help shape its next chapter.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is the organization's visible leader and key spokesperson: a strategic partner to the Board, a champion for fund development, a careful steward of the APF's finances, and a supportive leader for a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

Based in Glenville, New York, the APF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the care and protection of companion animals. The APF operates an animal shelter and a spay/neuter clinic and provides sheltering services to area municipalities under contract — advancing its mission with compassion, integrity, and sound stewardship.

Over more than nine decades it has grown from a small community effort into an integrated network of programs; adoption services, a low-cost community spay/neuter clinic, veterinary and medical care, behavior and training, free community outreach clinics providing basic care to the pets of persons in underserved areas, community education, pet bereavement and end-of-life support, pet food assistance, and robust foster and volunteer programs. With an annual operating budget of approximately $3.0 million, a dedicated team of 25 staff members, and nearly 100 active volunteers, the organization serves approximately 5,000 animals each year.

As CEO, you will hold overall responsibility for the leadership and management of the APF. You will report to the Board of Directors and directly supervise the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Philanthropy Officer, and Director of Human Resources and Administration.

Your leadership will span the full breadth of the organization including strategy, fund development, finance, operations, people, external relations, and compliance. In this role, you will:

  • Set the strategic direction and bring the vision and decisions to life with energy and measurable goals.
  • Champion fund development across the annual fund, major gifts, grants, events, and donor relationships to sustain and grow the mission.
  • Steward financial health through sound budgeting, audit oversight, internal controls, and fiduciary integrity.
  • Lead and grow the team by supervising, mentoring, and developing senior staff and fostering a healthy organizational culture.
  • Ensure excellent operations of the shelter and spay/neuter clinic, in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Serve as spokesperson and advocate representing the APF to donors, partners, government, and the media, and advancing public policies that protect companion animals.
  • Partner with the Board on governance, strategic planning, and the organization's long-term financial strength.

We are looking for a leader who combines genuine passion for the APF mission with the experience to lead a complex, mission-driven organization. Strong candidates will bring:

  • Progressively responsible senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or comparable organization.
  • A track record of success in fund development including annual giving, capital campaigns, major gifts, grants, and donor relations.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, audit oversight, and Board-level reporting.
  • Experience partnering with a volunteer Board of Directors and supporting effective governance.
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills through building, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication and public-representation skills as a credible spokesperson and advocate.
  • A commitment to animal welfare and the values of the APF.

The salary range for this position is $135,000 to $150,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The APF offers a competitive benefits package, including comprehensive health insurance, retirement benefits, generous paid time off, and additional benefits that support employee well-being and professional growth.

The APF has partnered with The Killoe Group to conduct this national search. All inquiries and application materials will be handled confidentially through The Killoe Group.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter, résumé, and the names and contact information for three professional references to apfceo@thekilloegroup.com.
