The Anderson Company, LLC, a site development company for 30 years is seeking a laborer who can run heavy equipment. This position will be under the supervision of a superintendent and will work with other construction professionals. By applying to this position, you acknowledge that you will be responsible for commuting to the jobsite you have been assigned to. We operate in the Northern Virginia area.

The Laborer / Small Equipment Operator performs a combination of manual labor and equipment operation in support of excavation, site development, underground utility installation, grading, and earthwork projects. This position consists of approximately 60% operation of small construction equipment and 40% physical labor and is subject to change depending on operational needs. The employee must operate equipment safely while assisting the crew with excavation, pipe installation, backfilling, grading, and general site preparation.

Essential Job Functions

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate small construction equipment, including mini excavators, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, trench rollers, walk behind rollers and other compact equipment.
  • Excavate trenches for water, sewer, storm drain, or dry utilities.
  • Perform grading, backfilling, loading, material placement, and site preparation.
  • Excavate around existing underground utilities while following utility locate markings and company procedures.
  • Load and transport soil, gravel, aggregate, and construction materials.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, routine maintenance, fueling, and cleaning.
  • Report equipment defects or maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Maintain awareness of surrounding personnel and jobsite hazards while operating equipment.

Manual Labor

  • Dig, shovel, rake, grade, and compact soil and aggregate.
  • Install underground utility pipe, fittings, structures, and related materials.
  • Assist with trench preparation, bedding, backfill, and compaction.
  • Set grades using lasers, grade rods, string lines, and measuring equipment.
  • Load and unload tools, pipe, fittings, and construction materials.
  • Operate hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Install erosion control devices and assist with site cleanup.
  • Perform general labor duties as directed by the Foreman or Superintendent.

Physical Capabilities

To perform this job successfully, an employee must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods (8–12 hours) on uneven, muddy, rocky, or sloped terrain.
  • Frequently climb into and out of equipment multiple times throughout the workday.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, crawl, and twist.
  • Frequently reach overhead, below the waist, and in front of the body.
  • Frequently use hands for gripping, grasping, pushing, pulling, and operating equipment controls.
  • Frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently shovel soil, gravel, and other construction materials.
  • Enter and exit trenches in accordance with company safety procedures when required.
  • Tolerate prolonged sitting while operating equipment and prolonged standing during manual labor.
  • Work around moving heavy equipment, open excavations, underground utilities, traffic, and construction hazards.
  • Maintain visual acuity, depth perception, peripheral vision, and hearing sufficient to safely operate equipment and identify hazards.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, dust, and humidity.

Qualifications

  • Previous excavation, underground utility, or heavy civil construction experience preferred.
  • Experience operating mini excavators, skid steers, or compact track loaders preferred.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Ability to understand grade stakes, utility markings, and excavation plans is preferred.
  • Ability to follow OSHA excavation and trench safety regulations.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work overtime as needed.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor excavation and construction sites.
  • Exposure to dust, mud, noise, vibration, diesel equipment, and changing weather conditions.
  • Frequent work near trenches, excavations, underground utilities, and heavy equipment.
  • Overtime, weekend work, and occasional travel to project sites may be required.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow all OSHA regulations, including excavation and trench safety standards.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and equipment deficiencies immediately.
  • Maintain safe work practices around underground utilities, heavy equipment, and excavation operations.
