Who You Are

Our Wood Mill Operator 3 works under supervision of foreman encompassing the skills of Decksaw/Debarker, Turning Operator, Forklift, Ripsaw/Offbear, Dowler, and Yardman/Loader.

WHERE YOU WILL WORK

Our wood mill is located in McClure PA.

Responsibilities

Group Leader: Directs the movement of Sawmill/Temporary Employees in their daily work tasks by performing the following duties:

  • Checks to assure employees are at their workstations. Reports absenteeism to manager/supervisor and assure proper positions are filled to function adequately
  • Assures proper equipment is functioning and employees have tools and materials to work with
  • Instructs employees in proper use of equipment and how to do their respective jobs; Reports and checks on progress of activities
  • Assures safety rules and methods are being used in all areas and jobs; assures the cleanliness of all work areas
  • Checks outgoing dowels and Third-Party material for size, length, and quality and makes sure it is recorded and properly identified
  • Overseas or does the setup of equipment and sharpens saws and knives
  • May Operate dry kilns and assure proper loading and unloading of same
  • Keeps records and verifies accurate counts of inventory is reported

Facilities & Safety Technician: coordinates facility clean-up, safety program, safety compliance and building grounds maintenance by performing the following duties:

  • Provide safety training and coordinate record keeping
  • Conduct basic safety meetings
  • Assist with new hire and job training
  • Assist with quality control audits
  • Coordinate inventory management and recording
  • Coordinate building and grounds maintenance
  • Provide vacation coverage for other positions in facility
  • Assist maintenance staff with general repairs
  • Order and manage parts inventory
  • Work with internal and external customers
  • Perform plant and safety inspections
  • Develop basic corrective action for safety issues
  • Schedule and support housekeeping activity

Log Scaler/Buyer:

  • Receive and unload truck deliveries
  • Measure, mark, and stage log loads
  • Maintain purchasing and receiving records
  • Organize and control inventory
  • Build lasting, trust-based relationships with loggers and logging companies
  • Communicate complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Adapt tone, style, and messaging to each vendor’s preferences across phone, email, and in-person interactions

Truck Driver:

  • Inspects trucks for defects before and after trips and submits report indicating truck conditions in accordance with DOT regulations
  • Maintains driver logs according to DOT regulations
  • Delivers or picks up loads in accordance with schedule. Ensures all loads are secured and within limits
  • Keeps activity log of all routes driven along with the appropriate bills of lading
  • Keeps mileage record of vehicles and all other required documentation
  • Drives safely in accordance with DOT regulations and has a working knowledge of DOT regulations
  • May be required to perform Jockey moves to assist all facilities
  • May be required to perform Sawmill duties and basic operation duties if needed and certified
  • Follows all policies and procedures, best practices, DOT and OSHA regulations

Sawyer: Saws logs to best advantage into planks of various sizes, using hydraulic, air and electric operating equipment by performing the following duties:

  • Oil, grease and change saws as necessary; Also adjust Guide pins as required
  • Start up and adjust saws and related equipment
  • Roll bolt from bolt deck to carriage with log loader (may use cant hook when necessary) Secure with dog and carriage indexed by control buttons on log. Turn hand lever and button on carriage control board lever.
  • Operate hand lever which controls carriage movement to move carriage back and forth through saw to cut bolt into planks.
  • Turn bolt on carriage for sawing other side of bolt with log turner
  • Operate saw carriage to safely and accurately produce plank
  • Operate control panel to set thickness for automatic indexing. Operate control button on control panel to adjust taper
  • Clean and sweep up around equipment and work area and occasionally pick up plank that has dropped into carriage and push bark away from saw
  • Chop Plank from oversize logs
  • Set computerized set works to allow for change in thickness and drift
  • Control pace to provide correct “flow of material” to the rip lines

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be able to complete simple math, to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions and write simple correspondence.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.

Industrial lift truck certification.

The employee is occasionally required to walk, climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
