About The Octagon|Architects Foundation

Built in 1801, The Octagon has served as a private residence, a gathering place for political and cultural leaders, and now a museum exploring architecture, design, and the built environment. This internship offers a rare chance to contribute to its transformation into a model for sustainable preservation and innovative public programming.

Program Summary

The Octagon, a National Historic Landmark operated by the Architects Foundation, is seeking a motivated and curious architecture student intern to support museum operations, collections stewardship, interpretive initiatives, and preservation planning during a pivotal moment in its history. As the site prepares for a multi-year renovation, this internship offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with both the preservation and future vision of one of the nation's most significant historic homes.

Project responsibilities

  • Assist in refining and developing interpretive materials and tour narratives that connect The Octagon's architectural significance, layered history, and contemporary relevance to diverse audiences.
  • Lead guided tours for visitors, school groups, and special programs, helping to create engaging and meaningful experiences centered on architecture, history, and preservation.
  • Work with staff to inventory, research, and care for the museum's collection, gaining hands-on experience in collections management, object care, and preservation practices.
  • Support documentation, planning, and logistical efforts related to the building's upcoming multi-year renovation, including object movement, condition reporting, spatial documentation, and project coordination.
  • Assist with daily museum operations, public programs, and special events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Interest in architecture, historic preservation, architectural history, museum studies, or related fields.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a willingness to learn collections and preservation practices.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Interest in the connection between architecture, storytelling, and museum interpretation.

Learning Opportunities

Interns will gain practical experience in historic preservation, architectural interpretation, museum operations, collections care, and public engagement while contributing to the reimagining of a historic site for future generations.

Internship Details

This is an 8-week, full-time, hybrid paid internship scheduled from June 15, 2026, through August 7, 2026. The selected candidate will be required to report to the Architects Foundation 1-2 days per week, with the remaining work performed remotely. Onsite location- 1799 New York Avenue NW; Washington, DC 20006.

Eligible applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
