ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR

Job Classification

Primary Function

Supervises the staff caring for the chimpanzees and their housing areas and improves well-being and prevention of heart disease by close observation of chimpanzee behavior and careful cleaning procedures.

Reports to senior management.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises the work of all animal care staff, including night staff.
  • Hire and train animal caregivers on primary responsibilities.
  • Develop work schedules.
  • Complete performance reviews.
  • Schedule and facilitate weekly husbandry meetings.
  • Coach and develop staff on leadership and team-building.
  • Oversee and assign projects not directly related to animal care.
  • Liaison with other departments. May set up training schedule for other departments (i.e. lock-checking procedures).
  • Develop standard operating procedures.
  • Assist with feeding and cleaning chimpanzees as necessary.
  • Observe chimpanzee behavior and appearance. Report unusual behavior or injuries.
  • Oversee maintenance of records of health, behavior, cleaning, etc. Respond to reports from care staff.
  • Ensure compliance with enrichment and training objectives.
  • Oversee ordering supplies and maintaining stock of feed, bedding, and cleaning supplies.
  • Administer medications and treatment as needed.
  • Assist in planning and implementing special projects, including educational programs.
  • Participate in and may lead educational programs.
  • Assist behavioral or veterinary staff as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Supervision and Responsibility

  • Supervises and coordinates the work of animal care staff.
  • Trains and supervises volunteers.
  • Reports to senior management.
  • Knowledgeable about variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, veterinary technician degree, or AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification required.
  • At least 8 years’ experience working with animals, including 6 years working with non-human primates, and 3 years working with chimpanzees required.
  • A combination of 10 years’ related education and non-human primate / chimpanzee experience can be substituted for education / experience requirements.
  • Three years’ experience in supervisory role at an animal facility is required.

Other Requirements and Working Conditions

  • This work will require bending, carrying, kneeling, lifting, listening, pulling, pushing, reading, speaking, squatting, standing, stooping, stretching, walking, watching, and writing.
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry 50lbs for short distances.
  • Must be able to assist in lifting chimpanzees (up to 75lbs).
  • Duties may require driving Chimp Haven vehicles, and must have a valid driver’s license and meet Chimp Haven’s motor vehicle operating standards.
  • Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Potential exists for animal bites and scratches.
  • Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissues and body fluids, toxic chemicals, zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, shigella, etc.

infectious agents (Hepatitis B, C, HIV, etc.)

  • Weekend, holiday, and night work may be necessary. Responsible for check-ins with care staff on weekends, holidays, and nights.
  • Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program that includes hepatitis B and other inoculations is required.
  • Safety training, equipment, clothing, and supplies will be provided.

75 miles to work at Chimp Haven.

mountain biking, running, and horseback riding.
