Caretaker Job Summary
The Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground Caretaker is responsible
for supporting the Manager in the daily maintenance and groundskeeping of the
Club’s Gunks Campground.
The campground is located on the border of New Paltz and Gardiner, NY, and just a
20-minute walk to nearby cliffs. This position is a seasonal part-time or full-time
position from approximately April 5 through November 15. The Caretaker may
camp for the season onsite, or would have nearby accommodations. The Caretaker
is expected to function in support of and at the direction of the Gunks Manager, the
AAC Lodging Director, and the Mohonk Preserve Stewardship Director. Weekend
work is expected, days off will occur mid-week.
As the Caretaker, you will:
Maintain the lawn and general landscaping, alongside the Manager
- Maintain the Clivus system through standard servicing
- Monitor campground conditions and note needed repairs
- Maintain firewood supply (split, stack, organize) and restock communal
- Keep the campground free of trash and other debris
- Monitor the plumbing systems and electrical systems for issues
- Clean the shower-house, cabins, and bathrooms regularly, alongside the
- Execute repairs and maintenance, including minor plumbing issues,
winterization of the campground, replacing light fixtures, fixing
groundskeeping equipment, etc.
- Maintain strong working relationship with the Mohonk Preserve stewardship
Provide campground information to guests
- Collect fees
- Have adept understanding of reservation system
- Support the Manager as needed
- Maintain a positive working relationship with the Mohonk Preserve and
- Assist with the planning and execution of events held at the campground
Promote and sell merchandise
- Additional duties as assigned by the Manager and Lodging Director and that
are required for the successful operation of the campground
Believe in and espouse the AAC vision and mission
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Have qualified experience in trade work, such as repairs, maintenance, or
- Have an acute attention to detail
- Have experience in guest or client services
- Preferred: First Aid training, Understanding of Google Drive including Google
Docs & Sheets
Reporting Relationship
The Caretaker will report to the AAC Gunks Campground Manager, and will on
occasion work with the AAC Lodging Director and the Mohonk Preserve
Stewardship Director.

About the Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground
Since 2006, the Mohonk Preserve, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and
Historic Preservation, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and the American
Alpine Club partnered together to create a campground near the popular
Shawangunks climbing area. Construction was completed in 2014 by The Palisades
Interstate Park Commission, and the American Alpine Club and Mohonk Preserve
jointly operate and manage it under an operating license with The Palisades
Interstate Park Commission.
