The Payroll Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for a diverse workforce. This role will manage the payroll team, implement best practices, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations across multiple states and employee groups. The Sr Payroll Director position offers a base salary of $130,000-$140,000 per annum. The position is eligible for annual bonus opportunities on top of base salary.

The Sr. Payroll Director position is an on-site position located at our corporate office in Owings Mills, MD OR Huntersville, NC. Hybrid working schedules are available.

This role will manage the payroll team, implement best practices, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations across multiple states and employee groups. Essential Responsibilities
- Oversee the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing for all employees, including various pay types such as salaries, bonuses, commissions, and deductions.
- Lead and develop the payroll team, providing guidance and support to enhance performance and efficiency in handling payroll for multiple employee groups.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax laws and labor laws, particularly for multi-state operations.
- Prepare and analyze payroll reports, metrics, and trends to support strategic decision-making and identify areas for improvement.
- Manage payroll systems and software, specifically Workday, ensuring data integrity and implementing upgrades or changes as necessary.
- Develop and implement payroll policies and procedures to improve efficiency and accuracy across different pay structures and employee groups.
- Work closely with HR, Finance, and other departments to ensure seamless integration of payroll with other business functions and to address any payroll-related inquiries.
- Coordinate internal and external audits related to payroll functions, ensuring all processes comply with regulations and resolving any discrepancies.
- Provide training and support to staff on payroll processes, compliance issues, and the effective use of Workday for payroll operations.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned; including, but not limited to, administrative functions, special projects, etc.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in payroll management, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role overseeing payroll for multi-state operations and various employee groups.
- Proficiency in payroll software, specifically Workday, Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and Google Suite.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience processing payroll using Workday.
- Strong understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and compliance requirements for multi-state payroll processing.
- Experience in handling payroll for different pay types, including hourly, salaried, piece rate and commission-based employees.
- Experience managing multiple payroll cycles for multiple entities.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with experience in managing complex payroll scenarios.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion.
- Strong organizational skills, and the ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines.
- Certification (e.g., CPP, FPC) is a plus.
- Experience in overseeing processing payroll for employees in Canada.
- Experience using OneSource Virtual (OSV).
- Proven experience in conducting due diligence related to payroll operations during mergers and acquisitions.
