I. Position Summary

The Deputy Communications Director is the second-in-command of AIPN's communications shop, working closely with the Communications Director to shape and execute how AIPN tells its story in support of our mission to prepare America for artificial superintelligence and advance responsible AI policy. This is a senior role: you will run day-to-day communications operations, lead production across earned, owned, and social channels, and step in for the Communications Director when needed.

The ideal candidate is a sharp writer and editor with strong news judgment, a track record in press or political communications, and the range to move between high-level message strategy and hands-on execution under deadline.

II. Responsibilities

A. Media and Earned

  • Draft and edit press releases, statements, op-eds, talking points, and media advisories in AIPN's voice.
  • Build and manage relationships with reporters, producers, and editors; pitch stories and field inquiries.
  • Help manage rapid response, turning around statements and reactive material quickly as news breaks.
  • Staff principals for interviews and media appearances, including prep and messaging.

B. Owned and Social

  • Oversee AIPN's social presence in coordination with the Director of Digital Organizing, including content calendars and reactive posting.
  • Maintain message consistency and brand voice across earned, owned, and paid channels.

C. Strategy and Team

  • Partner with the Communications Director on communications strategy, planning, and message development.
  • Manage communications projects end-to-end, coordinating across Government Affairs, Digital Organizing, and outside vendors.
  • Supervise junior staff, contractors, and freelancers as the team grows.

III. Qualifications

A. Required

  • 5–8 years of communications experience in political, advocacy, government, campaign, agency, or newsroom settings.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clean, persuasive copy under tight deadlines.
  • Strong news judgment and a working understanding of how to earn and shape coverage.
  • Demonstrated experience managing media relationships and executing rapid response.
  • Based in the D.C. area; this is a hybrid role reporting to our Capitol Hill office at least once per week.

B. Preferred

  • Existing relationships with technology, national-security, or political reporters.
  • Experience supervising staff or managing freelancers and vendors.
  • Familiarity with social platforms, email tools (Hubspot preferred), and website/CMS administration (WordPress preferred).
  • Exposure to AI policy and/or national-security policy.
