What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Underwriter-CRE position at The Agency?
Commercial Credit Underwriter-CRE
Location: West of Chicagoland
Our client is a well-respected, commercially focused community bank with a strong reputation for relationship banking and disciplined credit culture. Their lending strategy centers around owner-occupied commercial real estate and locally owned businesses, and they're looking to add an experienced Commercial Credit Underwriter to their team.
This is a highly visible role working directly alongside the Chief Credit Officer. You'll become a trusted partner in evaluating commercial lending opportunities, helping maintain the bank's strong credit quality while supporting continued growth.
What You'll Do
- Perform detailed underwriting and financial analysis for commercial lending relationships, with a primary focus on owner-occupied commercial real estate.
- Analyze business and personal financial statements, tax returns, cash flow, collateral, guarantor strength, and repayment capacity.
- Prepare clear, well-supported credit presentations and loan recommendations for approval.
- Assess loan structure, policy compliance, risk ratings, and covenant considerations.
- Partner closely with commercial lenders throughout the underwriting process while maintaining independent credit judgment.
- Participate in discussions around complex credit requests and portfolio management.
- Serve as a key resource to the Chief Credit Officer on commercial credit decisions.
What We're Looking For
- 5-10 years of commercial credit underwriting experience in a community or regional bank.
- Strong experience performing actual commercial underwriting, not simply spreading financials or portfolio administration.
- Significant experience underwriting owner-occupied commercial real estate transactions.
- Solid understanding of commercial financial statement analysis, tax return analysis, cash flow, collateral valuation, and global debt service coverage.
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to present sound credit recommendations.
- A collaborative mindset with the confidence to ask questions, challenge assumptions when appropriate, and contribute to a strong credit culture.
Why This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join a stable community bank where credit is valued, relationships matter, and your underwriting expertise will have a direct impact on the institution. You'll work side-by-side with an experienced Chief Credit Officer in a role that offers meaningful exposure, influence, and long-term growth.
