Description

The Theatre Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in theatre arts that inspires creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-expression while supporting students' academic, artistic, and personal growth. The Theatre Teacher develops engaging lessons aligned with New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and provides students with opportunities to develop acting, performance, technical theatre, and production skills. The Theatre Teacher also directs student performances and collaborates with school staff to foster a vibrant arts program that enriches the overall educational experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver engaging theatre instruction aligned with New York State Learning Standards and the Academy's curriculum, mission, and instructional expectations.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, confidence, and respect among students.
  • Teach foundational and advanced theatre concepts, including acting techniques, improvisation, voice, movement, script analysis, character development, and theatre history.
  • Introduce students to technical theatre, including stagecraft, lighting, sound, costumes, props, scenic design, and stage management, as appropriate.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and supervise school theatrical productions, performances, showcases, and other performing arts events.
  • Coordinate auditions, rehearsals, production schedules, and performance logistics while ensuring student safety and effective supervision.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, developmental, and artistic needs of all learners.
  • Assess student learning through performances, projects, classroom participation, written assignments, and other formative and summative assessments.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, assessments, and progress in accordance with school policies.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, counselors, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Foster positive relationships with students by encouraging artistic growth, confidence, teamwork, leadership, and responsible citizenship.
  • Integrate technology and innovative instructional strategies to enhance theatre instruction and student engagement.
  • Maintain theatre classrooms, performance spaces, costumes, props, and instructional materials in a safe, organized, and functional condition.
  • Support school-wide events, assemblies, performances, community outreach activities, and interdisciplinary projects as appropriate.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional learning communities, professional development, parent conferences, and other school activities.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress, performance, expectations, and program activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all Academy policies and procedures, New York State education requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive team environment by promoting effective communication, maintaining productivity, and delivering responsive support to internal and external partners.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of theatre arts, acting techniques, directing, theatre history, and performance pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of technical theatre, including stagecraft, lighting, sound, costumes, props, and theatrical production processes.
  • Ability to develop engaging, standards-based lesson plans that promote creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and manage student theatrical productions and performances.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management abilities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, administrators, families, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity, student achievement, and continuous professional growth.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

 

Pay Transparency: The salary range for this role is $62,500 - $80,000. Base pay offered may vary within the posted range based on several factors, including but not limited to education, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, Performing Arts, Education, or a related field required.
  • Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Theatre or an appropriate Performing Arts certification preferred, or ability to obtain certification in accordance with state requirements preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience directing theatrical productions, student performances, or related performing arts activities preferred.
  • Experience integrating technology into arts instruction is preferred.
