The Able Baker is a small, locally owned bakery in Maplewood, New Jersey. We bake cakes, cookies, pies, and other classic desserts, all from scratch on premises. We're a well-known destination in our town, as loved for our great coffee and baked goods as for our outstanding service and community vibe.
We opened our doors in October 2011, doubled our space in 2016, and will be opening our second location later this year. We have been featured in the New York Times, Real Simple, NJ Monthly, American Express Business Online, and more. We support local arts and education initiatives, and donate generously to organizations that champion social justice, fight food insecurity, and promote equality for all.
We are looking for full-time or part-time Production Bakers. The kitchen is a collaborative group; flexibility and a willingness to contribute wherever needed is essential. High standards, fast pace, and solid pastry skills are necessary to keep up with high-volume output.
Job Requirements:
- Full-time, 40 hrs/week and part-time, 24-30 hrs/week
- 2 years of experience in a commercial bakery or pastry department
- Minimum associate's degree and/or completion of pastry certification
- Team player in the Kitchen, and with Front of House
- Positive, effective communication skills
- Must be capable of lifting boxes or containers weighing up to 50 pounds and standing for long periods of time
- Able to work in fluctuating temperatures and a hectic environment
- Flexibility to work with the scheduling constraints of a small bakery driven by customer demand
- Weekend availability required
- Position may also require early mornings, evenings, and extended shifts during peak periods
- Solid (basic) piping skills. Pie-making experience is a plus, though not required
Job Description:
- Mix and bake recipes to company standards
- Bake off all products to recipe specs
- Finish baked goods using frostings, icings, and fillings
- Share in prep work, including chopping fruits and nuts, mixing our GF flour blend, restocking ingredients, etc.
- Maintain a clean workspace, including washing dishes and cleaning/sanitizing kitchen
- Precision in working with allergens and ingredient limitations (gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.)
- Support team efforts to complete the workload efficiently. This includes non-baking tasks such as receiving shipments and rotating stock
- Meet standards of quality and productivity in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
